The Mellotron Group

Hi All, I'm new to your group and have been enjoying the recent 
threads.  While off from work for the holidays, I was browsing the 
Moog site and was pleased to see the announcement of the re-
introduction of Taurus Bass pedals.  Moog will limit production to 
1,000 units and will ship late 2009.  For me, the 5 most important 
instruments for Prog, in this order, are Mellotron, Bass Pedals, 
Hammond organ, 12-string, and mini-Moog.  Happy Holidays.

That really depends on if you're talking about the "first wave" of
progressive - when they just thought that they were making cool music and
used the instruments they liked. Subsequent use of things like the Roland
guitar synth, Chapman Stick and extensive use of certain guitars and basses,
like Alembic's also scream "progressive". I think we ought to think about
other types of the gear that made the sounds we all enjoy --- Hammonds are
less interesting without a Leslie and really come to life with a hot or even
overdriven amp - heck, Pinder used a Marshall stack on stage with his MkII.
Also, many groups use ARP's, Oberheims, Crumars and other electronics to get
a distinguished sound as the 'prog' category became overrun.

 

The there's the music itself...

 

Vance...Use of the Chamberlin also created a distinctive sound from the
'tron users..

Hi Frank.  I'm actually a guitar player, but learning keys.  My Hammond
is a T400 series, Moog is a Little Phatty(great basses),  MIDI pedals
are Roland PK5.  I don't have a Mellotron, but instead use Roland SRX-07
vintage keys module in a Juno G.  Can't honestly say how the samples
compare to a live Tron because never had a chance to hear one up close
and personal.  I suspect, however, not to close because the Hammond
samples on the Roland don't sound like the T400.  They're not bad, just
don't sound the same.
 
This is a Tron group so I have to share how I became hooked.  One of the
1st albums I ever purchased was "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road".  The liner
notes listed all the equipment used for each song.  For "Grey Seal",
right after piano was, listed Mellotron.  That did it for me.

Do you usually wire the Roland PK5 pedals to the Moog LP?  You should
be able to replicate the classic Taurus I sounds with that set-up. 
What Moog bass presets do you use?  I'd like to have a Little Phatty
chat with you off list.

Now you made me dig out a photo I have to double check my memory (knowing
how crappy that can be these days)..It's the Moodies at the Shrine Expo Hall
(next to the Shrine Auditorium, former home of the Oscars) in LA circa 1968.
R to L: John with P-Bass and HiWatt (pretty sure - photo is a bit obscured)
stack, Justin with Tele (no 335 to be seen) and Marshall stack, Graeme with
early logo on kick with one hang-tom and one floor tom, Ray with flute and
mic, and Mike with Marshall head on the Mk II facing the rest of the band
with a full Marshall stack at the back of the stage - kind of a wall of very
loud amps with Graeme nestled in between. The fellow who took the shot told
me about being there: the PA had taken a dump and the whole audience at this
multi-band, standing-only show finally sat down on the floor to wait. A half
hour passed and the first sound to come back to life was the mellotron - and
he said it was a bit eerie as the entire sea of people rose as one when the
'tron sound washed over the crowd..sounds like a good thing to me..

interested in the I/O and hardware aspect.  Can anybody point me at a

The DS Lite only has a stereo headphone out jack, but with the Korg
DS-10, it can be used to trigger a hardware sequencer. I've been able
to trigger my PEK.

There are several videos of the DS-10 on youtube, but none that I know
of with with hardware.

Thanks Bernie.  I understand that there is a mod for a micro SD for
storage, a USB out might not be too hard to implement.  I have a four
year old unit courtesy of my eight year old nephew.  so I wasn't sure
about the hardware setup

?Basically, It's a software "game" cartridge for the Nintendo DS Lite. It is essentially 6 MS-20 synths with a six track sequencer.? It also has a bunch of Kaoss pads for modulation and inputting notes.? Notes can be input using a stylus on a virtual keyboard and also entering them on a grid.? Patterns can created and chained together to create a song up to 100 measures long. Up to 8 DS Lites can be synched wirelessly for a helluva jam.? It's quite deep and quite fun.? It also sounds fantastic.
