lacing/replacing tapes...

lacing/replacing tapes...

2008-07-16 by jeffc@netaxs.com

hi folks...

i need a refresher course in replacing m400 tapes.
i'm doing this for a friend - mine are all in fine shape,
and i have not done this for about 15 years now.

so i have an old frame that needs its tapes replaced.
my understanding is that using the old tapes to pull through
the new tapes is a recommended method. [yes? no?]

i have a new set of streetly tapes [on the little red spools].
before i even break them out, i recall that there are marking
that pertain to:

1] cut here

2] start of sound [to be aligned with the heads once installed]

3?] are there key numbers on them?

so what do i need to do to use the old tapes to pull on the
new tapes. i remember when i did my last set i had 35 pieces of
tape hanging around my studio and tempting my cats to play.
sadly, i have no more cats at the moment, but i still think
that was not the simplest way to do it. i did some searching
around, but could not find a website with 'proper' instructions
on handling a fresh set of streetly tapes. these have been
sitting around for a couple years now and i weant to deliver
the freshly loaded rack to my friend kurt next week. i even
have an 'extra' m400 to use as a staging machine, so all i
need is the tutorial on this... and a translation on the marks.

thanks in advance folks!
jeff

Jeff Baby,

1) Take the red reel that says 1 - 12.

2) Enlist a friend

3) Obtain scissors, 1/4" spicing tape and screwdriver.

4) Demag metal objects

5) Sex with a whore

6) Undo first reel and look for punched hole. Cut across it.

7) Splice new tape to the end of the old tape i.e. the tail of the low G on
the front tape retaining bar of the frame.

8) Sex with friend

9) Loosen first two retaining screws of front retaining bar.

10) Allow spliced joint to pass under screws.

11) Ask shagged out friend to hold the tail of the tape to be replaced...AND
NOT LET GO..and then undo the two retaining screws on back retaining bar.

12) As friend pulls old tape out, you allow new tape in until the 'start'
mark line is just before the head gap of the tape head and the loop length is
the same as the other remaining tapes. Secure first screw on front retaining
bar.

13) Ask friend, who has now recovered and wants more of you, to tighten the
first screw of the back retaining bar. The new tape is now secure.

14) Cut tape at next punched hole.

15) Repeat 34 times stopping for casual sex when the mood takes you. I
forgot to include the courtesy tissues. Sorry.

Best,

Well I've just ordered a new tape frame with tapes and I was thinking of getting some new tapes for the old frame, but that really sounds way too exhausting and I am sure my wife would object. I don't think the cats would be too impressed either.

Mopping up. How could anyone forget. This procedure is required frequently
when working on Mellotrons. Also occasionally needed when playing them.

It's easy to replace tapes. Pulling through takes about 90 minutes. Starting
with an empty frame takes the same or less.

Tools for pulling through.

1. beer*

2. screwdriver

3. scissors

4. tapes

5. back brace

Tools necessary for loading an empty frame

1. Scotch*

4. tapes

5. tape insertion tool**

6. back brace

* this tool can often slows the process to two or three days.

** there really is a neat little tool that you can make that makes this

and no, your dick wont work.

I did it about a year and a half ago by myself with 2 cats looking on. It wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be...except for the few times I let go of the tape.

So, at that point, I bet the whore ran off with your friend, leaving you to finish the job yourself (tape lacing, I mean). ;-)

thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you.

now kurt will finally have his clarinet-b/bass clarinet/alto sax frame.
i was hoping to replace all the springs on that rack [they are in bad
shape, but still workable], but since the dollar is so far down the
toilet i'd need a septic-tank-pump-truck to make them worth anaything,
he'll make do for now. i'll be delivering the frame next weekend, and
drinking A LOT OF BOURBON to celebrate.

did i mention 'thank you'?

can i substitute bourbon for both the beer and the scotch?
i don't generally keep beer in th house, and the only scotch i have
is 18 year old single mal - only for special occassions. but i always
have a large bottle of makers mark on hand. i put it on my cereal.
[the woodford reserve being a bit to pricey for me these days...]

this reminds me, i still need to make a 'special tool k' thingy.

which then ALSO reminds me...

it seems we have not heard anything from ken leonard or jerry korb
for quite some time. i hope they are well. they are both wonderful
guys and i have missed their presence. not that the rest of you
lot are any less wonderful, i don't know most of you as well or
have not met you personally [jimmy and gino being the exceptions].

anyone heard anything from them recently?

best to all,
jeff

this reminds me, i still need to make a 'special tool k' thingy.

which then ALSO reminds me...

it seems we have not heard anything from ken leonard or jerry korb
for quite some time. i hope they are well. they are both wonderful
guys and i have missed their presence. not that the rest of you
lot are any less wonderful, i don't know most of you as well or
have not met you personally [jimmy and gino being the exceptions].

anyone heard anything from them recently?

best to all,
jeff

12) As friend pulls old tape out, you allow new tape in until the 'start'
mark line is just before the head gap of the tape head and the loop length
is the same as the other remaining tapes. Secure first screw on front
retaining bar.

Sorry.

Best,

M

I only got as far as persuading my wife to hold together a broken tape whilst I applied the splicingtape.

I couldn't believe it either. I left the shop to answer the phone. When I
came back, she was installing it and hooking up the connectors. I grabbed the
camera and took these pictures. I have these photos hanging in my shop. They
make me smile. She also cuts out felt pads and puts them on the key springs
and pressure pads. If I'm up against a deadline, she'll always help where she
can as long as she doesn't run the risk of chipping a nail.

Images aren't being displayed

2008-07-18 by Bruce Daily

Hi folks-

Yahoo mail won't display any of our fine and grand pictures anymore. I just get an "x" in the top left corner of the pic area. Did I miss a download or something? Yahoo "Help" is of no help to me on this subject (or, I can't decipher it). Any thoughts? Are the pics being treated as spam or something now?

They came through on AOL. Maybe you need to check your Yahoo Email settings to see if you need to turn on Load Inline Graphics (or wording to that effect).

I get the emails at my home address so I can't speak to what Yahoo does to them, but have you happened to try right-clicking on the framed "x" and choosing "show picture?" If that doesn't work, it may be in the group settings or your email preferences.

More like envy, let's face it everyone wants to own mellotron, I've met people who pretend not be interested, or not to like them but I know that it's only to mask the depth of their envy because I've got one and they haven't! :)

you have to have your group preferences set to receive individual emails.
viewing the group via the web interface or via journals removes the
attachments.

does that explain the issue/problems?

note: picture attachements do not get added to the group 'files' section.

Thanks, Jeff, but my group preferences are already set up that way.
I don't get any images in either group or e-mail format. I prefer using e-mail format.
The images disappeared after my email compose screen changed format & gained the toolbar. A global change of the e-mail interface, I guess, but not one I chose.
There is an Adobe Acrobat pop-up that keeps pestering me to update a file that seems unrelated to this subject. It doesn't say that the update is free, so I just cancel it. Maybe I need this update, as it only pops up in our e-mail.

Thanks for all your help, everyone-

"Adobe Flash Player" is what it wanted to install, I just got prompted again. It seems unrelated to jpegs or stationary images.

yahoo 'pushed' the new email page format on me, but i reverted to
'classic' mode. look for something that's labeled 'yahoo mail classic'.
this should bring back the old interface.

...or maybe the new one has a new set of options?

i know gmail asks if i want to display pictures from a certain address,
and will remember to always do so if told. yahoo might have done this?

it might even be that acrobat is trying to 'steal' .jpg attachments
and you'll be okay after you do the update? acrobat reader is always
free - no need to fear. if you are concerned just open acro reader
and 'check for updates' [help menu - last item].

it should be safe, but if concerned, just go to adobe.com and
do it manually. sometimes these updates annoyances get in the
way of 'normal' functionality [though they shouldn't...]

it's probably an add on the yahoo page that's triggering the update.

Perhaps people can upload their pics to the photos section, then we
can all enjoy them? They can always be removed later, if so desired.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Re: Images aren't being displayed

2008-07-18 by Bruce Daily

Thanks for all the advice on this. I managed to make some adjustments in the mail options. Made the spam guard allow photos. I think it was stripping the pics from the messages. I tried re-opening some previous e-mails w/photos, but none were displayed. New messages w/pics may fare better.

    My best-

While I must confess that was indeed the case a while back, these days things are a bit different. I've been on a fitness kick for a few years, and I have actually managed to turn the manrack into pectorals and even lost the muffintop. It feels great, and I highly recommend it to anyone. I was starting to feel old on stage and am simply not ready to give up performing, and now I can play all night again without getting tired and sore. The best thing is that the people I play with at this time are twenty years younger than I or more, and they ARE tired at the end of the night. Heh.

The problem is that the pecs turned into the manrack. I'm working on
turning that back around, and so far, my wife is only focused on my

Well thank you. I honestly feel better than I have in ages and it's really gratifying to know that I wasn't really suffering from old age as much as I was from lack of proper maintenance! However, I have to admit that the best part is the approving looks from cute young women...

Gravity is relentless, exercise is hard. But, it can be done and the hardest part is getting started and turning it into a habit instead of a chore. Once you do that, it's pretty self-sustaining.
