As you might imagine, I've been playing it every 20 mins since I got it. Today I have to heave it into place where the M400 used to be on a marble fireplace in my bedroom. This could be amusing.

The sound is pretty glorious - very rich and full. There is also something quite different about the quality of the audio from this, as opposed to the M400. No idea what or why but I really like it. My M400 is really bright, but it's not jjust that whcih is different. The MkV has a warmth to it. Can't explain.

Here's a demo I put together for the former owner.

Chamberlin strings, new cellos, string section w/o cello, pump organ, Steve Hackett sustained guitar and combined choir.

Oh...and me noodling. :-)

I bet it sounds even better than it looks, if that's possible.

Congratulations, love to hear the sound when you can post a link for that...

I don't know about 'more powerful', but it lacks that top end excess that my occasionally over-bright M400 has. Martin explained to me today that the pre-amp is to blame for that. The Mk V has a sweetness of tone to it that is quite disarmingly beautiful, plus the tone control actually does something all the way around, something that the M400 didn't really do all that well. Of course you can atone for the M400's issues with judicious EQ but the Mk V handles it all on its own really well.

Of course having the two keyboards of sounds at your disposal must add some heft to the sound. It's a beautifully restored
machine and I am sure you get a lot of use out of it. Have fun with it. I look forward to your new and possibly redone older pieces with the new equipment.

Cheers,

Gary

--- In newmellotrongroup@yahoogroups.com, various contributors have passed comment about how Mike's MkV looks and sounds (beautiful, on both counts), but there is one aspect of this subject that intrigues me. Knowing roughly where Mike lives, I have to ask the question...how the hell did you get that delivered to your gaffe?

It took me nearly 90 minutes to get my M400 up 18 steps - admittedly single-handed. I had to slide the beast up the stairs on an old desk-top.

So how did you get something so big and so heavy up 4 (5?) flights of stairs? I think we want to know!

A sound practical question.

Foir those who do not know, I live in a third floor flat in the centre of Edinburgh built in 1895, very close to Edinburgh Castle. I cannot remember how many steps there are up to my place but it is along the lines of 130 or so, and they turn and are very narrow. There are three flights of stairs but they bend and turn all over the place.

The answer is that I got piano removers to lift it for me, and even they found it a bind. A Mk V is a dead weight, not unlike a Hammond but unlike the M400 it has two handles at the rear which make it a bit easier to lift!

Mike: Is the built in reverb on your MK-V working? Is it a spring?

I had the same question. Is it an original or new reverb?

I'm assuming it's the original. It's pretty 'twangy'.
