The Stone Girl Dances

Re: [newmellotrongroup] The Stone Girl Dances

I wish you had not identified which was which - I found the Mellotron version to be superior in sonic quality (ears of the listener, eh?), and certainly the preferable of the two. Just so you know, I started out with M-Tron, but found the quality of the samples to be quite limited - Cello and Three Violins were the most useful to me, with the Flute being full of drop outs and such. A lot of the rest of the sounds suffered from major issues. I was grateful to have it, but, it wasn't the solution for me.

Hi Mark,
It sounds like you didn't try to even get close to your Mellotron sound with the M-tron. I used to use the M-tron
and it sounded much closer to the actual Mellotron than in this comparison. Were you even attempting to get the
same sound or was that not your intent at the time you recorded these?

I don't in these 2 pieces but it is fairly obvious, when I first put them on youtube, everybody who commented preferred M-tron! But I don't think any of them owned a mellotron.

I prefer the mellotron too of course, there is a horrible warble in the stone girl dances again. But I still think M-tron has it's uses.

And I am really going now!

I was trying to create a particular atmosphere and the m-tron sound is closer to it, this is probably because I find software reverb easier to use than hardware and because my hardware reverb isn't very good!

Am I wrong in assuming that you could run your recorded Mellotron track through your software reverb?

What kind of hardware reverb do you use? I am gearing up for a 4 day FOH gig at a festival in Reno, NV with various acts
and I am contemplating on taking the Waves MultiRack set up instead of my usual outboard gear. I am finding
that the state of the VST effects have reached a level where they stand up quite well with the best of hardware
FX once you get used to them. I have been using this borrowed Waves rig on some recordings and thought this would be
a good time for a live test. I will still bring some hardware for monitor processing, etc., just to be safe. The reverbs
in the waves inventory are exceptional and I have even heard some lower priced plugins that sound quite nice as well.
Some of the early plugins I tried were horrible so it was a while before I went back to give them a serious look.
You might want to try some with your M-tron or Mellotron and see what you think.

Live, yes , alas. I have a very simple set up using software that was either free ( audacity ) or very old FL studio 6, which doesn't accept direct input. I can record and then add software reverb later but then I'm not quite sure what I'm going to get. At some point I'll probably buy a new laptop ( mine is 8 years old ) and some more professional software. But I really prefer a very simple set up, the more complicated programs seem to get in the way.

Thanks Gary, I use the effects on my mixer which is a yamaha MG82cx, I've also got a Behringer rv600 which I've never really got the hang of, I must try it out again. I definitely find the plugins easier to use.

I like both. The 2nd one focuses my attention more on the Mellotron and the first one more on the overall sound...if that makes any sense.

There is a patch on the Roland "Vintage Synths" sound card for the JV series called "Tape Echo" that is a brilliant mangling of the beloved "3 violins". One of my favorite factory patches. Yes, that's right, I said it...
