Some photos of #1380

2010-12-10 by Paul Marshall

Hi all,
As Frank has put up some excellent photos in recent times, thought it was time to share the rebuild of my beloved #1380.
Until Autumn 2009 she was in a T550 style flightcase which I had never really been happy with and so I decided that the iconic white box was the only way to go.
First port of call was the good folks at Streetly to see whether a surplus M400 cab was available. This proved not to be the case so I decided to build my own. I am an electrical engineer and not a joiner so this proved to be incredibly difficult and time consuming, but I am quite pleased with the result... Finnish birch ply and a LOT of precision routing, dowelling and sanding. The final finish was left to the experts at Streetly, my baby was taken to their paint shop and I am WELL impressed. Streetly were also invaluable for various bits and bobs which needed replacing as the rebuild progressed.
Refitted with the innards and restored to full working order by Christmas Day 2009 as a little present to myself. See what you think. And a BIG thankyou to Martin and John for their enthusiasm, help and advice, you guys are top :-)
I have loads more photos including the woodworking activity, if anyone is interested I will have a go at uploading to the group site (never done this before either).
Seasons greetings to all, Paul M.

Hi Paul,

Too bad there wasn't more demand for Mellotron cabinets (or is there?), your work looks dead-on! I mean, I'm looking at some of the detail on the lip underneath where the front panel goes and some of the internal bracing... I'm no Frank, but it looks just like the "factory" to me! Nice job. A bonus is the oak feet (weren't most of the M400s mahogany?).

Cheers,
Chris

Impressive! Thanks for posting the photos. I've often though of scratch
building a cabinet. This inspires me to have a go at it. I've actually created
a set of plans. Please upload the cabinet photos.

You can either edit your group membership settings and select "individual email" to get the messages delivered to you by email or try to dig the photos out of the messages->attachments menu selection.

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Some photos of #1380

2010-12-10 by Bruce Daily

Hi all-
That's taking initiative! Nice cabinet. Nice feets (and strong)!
Interesting timing on this thread. The thought of making my own cabinet also crossed my mind. I think a cabinet made from quarter-sawn oak elements would be spectacular, a Mission-style Mellotron!
Has anyone else made a custom 'tron case?

Ahh fuck me! The photo thing again! Some photo attachments don't show up and some do. Frank's photos never show up. It's not an issue with your browser. It's a Yahoo groups issue. The best way to ensure that everyone can see your photos is to upload them to the group photos area. It's dead easy to do.
