Re: Sad news

Today, at 5:50 AM est I lost my brother, Mark, to leukemia. He was 54 years
old and my closest sibling. Leukemia (AML) has also claimed my older
sister and my father, who both also died young. My little sister also has it.

So far, neither I nor my other brother, Bob, have shown any signs of it.

If you have it in you, please send a prayer Mark's way.

My deepest condolences Frank to you and yours.
Glad to hear that you and Bob are in the clear!
Lost dad to ALS in 2002, at least it was quick.
As long as he is remembered, he's still with you.
Respectfully yours,
Tony Moffett Ph.D.

Re: Sad news

from the BJH page:

It is with great sadness that John Lees' Barclay James Harvest announces the passing of Woolly Wolstenholme. In recent weeks Woolly's mental health had taken a turn for the worse and sadly he took his own life on Monday 13th December 2010. As you can imagine, John, Craig, Jez and Kevin and everyone associated with the band are stunned that a shining light of Barclay James Harvest is no longer with us. In this difficult time our thoughts are with Woolly's partner, Sue. We would ask all of Woolly's fans to remember his incredible contribution to popular music and his unique presence on stage.

My sincerest condolences my friend. Glory lasts forever and so do moments of joy. I will remember Wooly as a glorious musician who gave me so much joy. I can only understand what he did as magic. He contributed so much good to my life.

I will honor him and never forget him and I will tell people his name.

Best

Re: [newmellotrongroup] Sad news

2010-12-14 by lsf5275@aol.com

I have been friends with Martin Smith for many years. Over the years he has
done a number of nice things for me, but the one I will remember most is
receiving a phone call at work about 6 years ago. Upon answering the phone
I heard a voice say, "I have someone here who wants to say hello." Then I
heard the voice of one of my keyboard heroes, Woolly Wolstenholme. That day I
spent about twenty minutes (at Martin's expense, mind you) speaking to
someone who I had admired for more than 34 years. Woolly was very nice and
easy to talk to. I don't remember everything we talked about but it was
something I will never forget.

Later, in 2009, I was fortunate to work with Woolly and BJH at ROSfest.
From our first greeting he could not have been a warmer, nicer man. Actually,
everyone in the band treated me like a brother. I spent about half the
weekend with the band and I had a chance to have Woolly sit in my hotel room
and show me all sorts of things on the Mellotron (386) that I just happened
to have in my room. We spent time chatting about our lives and his music. He
told me that this was still early in his musical career... That he wasn't
winding down or even just cruising along. He told me that he had written
lots of song and had a head full of ideas. He seem so optimistic. By that
time, I was 7 months into my sobriety. I enjoyed one drink with Woolly. It is
the last one I have had and will remain such.

Woolly and Martin were best friends, so I can imagine the pain Martin and
all of those close to Woolly must be feeling. As you all know, I recently
lost my brother. In a way, we have all lost another. He was truly a decent
man and a great talent.

Some of my treasured memories of a great performer and a very nice guy.

Very sad news. Thank you, Frank, for your personal tribute to Woolly
and the photos.

And thank you, Martin, for telling us.

I'm going to play "Everyone Is Everybody Else" now in Wooly's memory.

An absolute tragedy. I was fortunate enough to spend an evening at Woolly's a few years ago - he was the nicest guy you could hope to meet and a great writer and player.

My deepest condolences to everyone, especially Martin.

For me, Woolly was as much the sound of Barclay James Harvest as Pinder was to the Moody Blues.

Apart from his songwriting, he brought the sound of the 300 to us. I don't think any other musician capably did that as well as Woolly. For me, he really was the main M300 player, and he will be missed.

It's always shocking that someone could go like that, especially after writing and crafting such wonderful music.

But depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain, and requires professional treatment. It's never just a case of the blahs.

Despite that, he left us some truly great music that we can listen to and revisit again.

I'm sure he would want us not to be sad, but to continue enjoying and being uplifted by his music and to be remembered in that same way - as an uplifting spirit of music.

Perhaps this is the best way to honour him.

Sincerest condolences, Martin, et al.

Similar to what Frank 2 wrote, my telephone interview with Wooly for The Mellotron Book revealed him to be very pleasant and accommodating, and a real gentleman.

This is dreadful news and deeply saddening. I shall think of Woolly everytime I switch on my M300 and swoop into She Said - one of my first mellotron memories.
