Tony,

Professionally speaking, Photoshop is the only way to go. Yes, it is a  
huge program and seems very confusing, but if you have it already, I  
would suggest learning how to do the things you want to do with it.  
Just because it's a huge program that does basically anything you  
could possibly want it to do, doesn't mean that you have to know  
everything about it.

So if you do have it, you might want to check out the tutorials at  
lynda.com. They are really terrific and the site has tutorials that  
cover just about any software you might want to use. Everything is  
clear and concise and you could learn that bit you need to know about  
Photoshop, quickly and easily.

Two or three of my "hobbyist" friends say Photoshop Elements is quite  
good and with a free trial, you could check it out before laying down  
your cash.
