That must take an incredible amount of processor power to get the most out
of it.

from Wikipedia, "It is based on the same principle as _sampling_
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sampling_(music)) . However, the samples are not
played back conventionally, but are instead split into small pieces of around 1
to 50_ms_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millisecond) . These small pieces
are called grains. Multiple grains may be layered on top of each other, and
may play at different speeds, _phases_ (http://en.
wikipedia.org/wiki/Phase_(waves)) , volume, and frequency."

The high end granular synths split sound up even smaller than 1 ms.

OK, I've heard of granular synthesis, but haven't got a clue what it is.
Simple explanation for we simple folks?

little while. I just have to record a guitar part and mix. I finally got a
piece of software that does a very musical job of granular synthesis. So, I
took elements from the first 15 seconds of my album and time expanded it to 3
minutes and added a few knick knacks. I think y'all'll enjoy it. The tron
sounds great slowed waayyy down. Susan's voice sounds great too. Very
ambient and trippy!
