techno technique

2001-06-22 by GAmoore@aol.com

I am wondering if anyone knows how to create this common trick. There
seems to be a common technique of fast 16th notes but they alternate in
tone. For example in the chorus of Underworlds "Pushups" when it sounds
like he is saying "Push it" DadaDadaDada. It sounds a bit like a two
handed clav sound. Possibly played so that alternating notes are on
different patches? TIA.

If I am listening to the right bit, I think on that track the pattern is
actually programmed (and repeated) and it's actually DadaDadaDa--.
and sometimes --daDadaDa--.
Another more 'automated' way to do it would be to use a single 16th
delay with no feedback, on an 8th note beat pattern. Mix delay level
and freq response to suit...but it then would be DadaDadaDada. always.

all dada'd out now...

BTW: The sound is probably a rich saw synth programmed for amp and possibly
filter cutoff to react to (probably) velocity.

Actually the song is Push Upstairs. Its not as clear on the live album
but on the studio album it forms the distinctive riff of the song. BUt
I've heard it on other techno CD's too.

I don't think its an echo. There is a pickup note or two before the down
beat.
da da Da da Da da Da

It might be done with using the same note and patch but varrying the
velocity 120-40-120-40.... I'll have to experiment.

Any other ideas?

Hmmm, there is a similar pattern on the Korg MS-2000 its an 8 step pattern
cycling at 1/32 note.
