No they don't, but have you put on Dark Side of the Moon lately on a
record player? I was shocked, haven't listened to it in 13 years and
I was just speechless!

some of the best selling albums of all time sound like crap.

Who decides what sounds like crap.
You can measure headroom, floating points etc but you can't really say which
sounds better than the other, it will always be your personal opinion. I
recently saw an interview with John Cale who has I think had a point when he
said that nothing gets better only different.
These days when you talk about sound quality you mostly refer to how loud
the record sounds. In music terms that means to what extent you have been
able to take out all dynamics and stay at an infinate peak.
Has anybody wondered why the Beatles are still one of the best selling bands
in the world, now to the 3rd generation after their split-up. I looked it up
and they we're bestselling in 97, 98, 00 and 01. I seriously doubt that they
would have done better if they had been recorded in 32/192.

The one caveat that I find expensive, quality, high-end gear really affords
is time. I basically agree with you. I can get great sounds with a tin can
and a piece of string... but it takes a lot longer and your options are
limited. With a great signal chain and a great instrument, I find that I
usually get a great sound sticking the mic in front of the instrument with
minimal fuss. It lets me concentrate on other stuff.

...and say, mightn't it be time for this (perfectly interesting) thread
maybe moved over to the OT list?

Subject: Re: [LUG] Getting The Best Sonic Quality Mixes

Please bear in mind that of course " the content " of the music is
absolutely the most important thing, however since this is a technical
discussion list, I thought it best to narrow it to just the technical
aspects.

One of my original reasons for starting this thread, was the idea that the
end user (the public) most likely will ultimately be comparing all the
music to listen to, (whether they realize it or not).

I am sure that most will agree that these days, lots of people listen to
their music collection in some sort of music player such as iTunes or some
other such application. And whether they listen to the original .aiff or mp3
or aac - all this music is still side-by-side next to each other, so
whether they are professional musicians able to dissect the minute audio
differences between songs or just "regular people" who might say something
like "that song is kind of dull sounding", the sonic aspects are being
compared, at least somewhat.

Having said all of that, that is one aspect of why I was concerned with
getting the best sonic quality mixes - to be able to compare favorably - on
a sonic quality level, with the best music out there.

And that is why this thread has helped so much - so thanks to everybody!

Hi Howard,

Ian might, but I don't. Can you spell it out please?
