is wmp playing an audio cd, or is this a data file (wav, mp3, etc)?

if it's an audio cd, it's probably returning a "match" from free or cddb.
that will happen often.

what does it do in other apps, like winamp?

It happens both on an Audio CD (not yet released) - and on a file
converted to MP3. Do you happen to know what this _match_ is
based on?

total number of tracks and total length, i think. it's not uncommon, i
wouldn't worry about it. one of my mixes matched "sounds of the enchanted
forest" or somesuch, which was abotu as far from the sound as you could get
;)

go ahead and edit the artist/title/track info and if you feel like it, upload
that information to cddb/freedb.
