OT: korg dw8000 output distortion

OT: korg dw8000 output distortion

2004-08-18 by Shayne Cafferata

a crippled dw8000 was recently passed on to me. at first i thought it
was the key contact problem i read about, but further inspection
revealed that within the first minute or so of turning it on, the keys
do trigger and also it will trigger thru midi. the problem is that the
output sound is complete distortion and not related at all to the actual
programmed sound. i know this because every once in awhile i will hear
the real sound for a second or two. the distortion will carry on for a
couple minutes, then fade into silence. somtimes the distortion will
return thru continued playing of the keys or midi input, but it always
cuts out or fades again. if i switch it off for a few seconds and back
on, sometimes the distortion will appear again. the battery seems fine
as parameter changes are retained in memory. can anyone suggest what
these symptoms indicate and what i need to do to fix it? could it be a
faulty power supply? there is a sticker on the unit that says "enermax
power inside". is this the factory power supply for the dw8000 or has it
been replaced?
thanks,
shayne

does the "enermax" sticker have a little star on it ? It's probably
just a sticker from a computer power supply some joker put on there.
I have one on my Cell that came with the 485 watt PS I use for my
music PC.
Have you tried loading the factory sounds? When I got mine every
preset sounded like gibberish, but I sussed the interface and
figgered out that a lot of the presets were scrambled from having no
battery. bn

ok, the sticker's just a sticker. i did a search and discovered that enermax makes computer power supplies...
i haven't tried loading the factory sounds, but i'm pretty familiar with programming, so i fooled around with parameters and should've gotten something, but the sound coming out was pretty much the same bucket of mud for every patch. i'll be opening it up this weekend. i really hope i can get this baby going. i've wanted something with an arpeggiator for a long time. and it'll be a great companion for my ex800. speaking of gibberish, sometimes dying batteries can produce very cool bizarre sounds. i think this is the more the case with digital synths, but i wonder if it occurs with certain analogs as well?
thanks for the feedback,
shayne
