power supply question

power supply question

2001-10-29 by creekree@gmx.de

i just printed out the manual when one thing caught my attention:
the poly 800 i bought has *naturally* no adaptor included ,sigh...
but i have a 9v 500mA adaptor, will it work? or is it gonna fry the
synth, since the manual says thas 300mA ones should be used?

by the way, olaf: i saw the pictures of your mods, could you include a
text file saying what exactly is shown? of course i want to modify my
poly 800 and any help is greatly appreciated. so where exactly do i
have to apply my soldering skills? what kind of pots did you use?
there are quite some posts dealing with this issue, but i find it
difficult to get all the information together, so if anyone can write
a brief description on how to install the resonance and q mods, my
eternal gratitude will be with them....

ok, as i said in my preceding posts: please dont be annoyed by my
stooopid questions, since you may well have been thousands of times
through this... but pleeeeeze???
(he-ho-has-the-stupid-smile-on-his-face will quit now - at last---
phew!)

thank-u-so-much in advance, christian

you won't fry it with 500mA. As long as the voltage, polarity, and plug
size are, and the current of the adapter is 300mA or more then it will work.
a 500mA power supply will run cooler and last longer too. But if somehow
the Poly 800 shorts out, you'll be frying it with more current.

Re: [korgpolyex] power supply question

Hi Christian,

I also bought a Poly800 without power supply, so I bought a cheap 500mA one.

It isn't controlled, and I measured a Voltage of 11.5 V if it is switched to
"9V"-position.
So I switched it to "7.5V" and measured inside the Poly if it is decreasing
while power consumption, but it stays at around 9V.

Possibly, with 300mA power supply it would go down to 9V during work, I
don't know.
But anything works great so it's ok.

More mod informations

2001-10-29 by Olaf

Hi Christian,

I added some comments for the pics in the modification album.

And there's a small sketch of the wiring for the pots.

It may look confusing, but it's simple, and it has the opportunity to
switch between factory and perform mode (this is when the knobs are
working.)

The hardware working (drilling, soldering) isn't too hard, but you
have to be careful, of course. The pots are not going out very
easily, just destroy them before you damage the PCB!

Greetings,

Olaf

hi olaf,

thanks for those descriptions, they ought to make mods much easier :)
but one thing came to my mind looking at the sketch you drew:
wouldn´t it be easier to solder the original trimpots out and then use
*them* as resistors? would spare the hassle to measure them and buy
resistors of the same capacity.... just a thought....(so don´t "just
destroy them before you damage the PCB!" hehehe) anyway, i read
somewhere that there are even more trimpots which could be redirected
to external pots, here´s a list:

VR1 - DCO Pitch adjust
VR2 - VCF Frequency adjust
VR3 - White Noise level adjust
VR4 - DCO Fine tune adjust
VR5 - VCF resonance adjust

does it make sense to , err.. whats the word.... "externalise" the
other three?

i´m eagerly waiting to get my poly800 delivered (thinking of all this
without even having one :) ), i´ll let you know what i did to it when
it´s here.... hehehe modding all over.....

Christian,

I totally agree. It would be the easiest thing to use the original trimpots,
but ......
you have to remove all solder tin, upper and lower PCB side of all three
trimpot contacts at the same time.
I'm not able to do that, so for me it was much easier to destroy them -
you'll see if you can.

Fortunately I had a set of resistors at home, but I'm sure they would not
have been very expensive, if I hadn't them available ;-)

The other "externalizations":
First I thought it makes no sense.
Playing some time now with my Poly800 I think they are not senseless and
possible I'll add them.

- the white noise could be a good effect, I use it sometimes while playing a
sound (one very good feature is that you can edit all program data during
playing, but a knob would be better)
- tuning range with the front panel slider could be some wider, so this is
also useful (don't know the difference between tune and pitch adjust)

I miss another adjustment, I'll open another thread for this issue.

Olaf

and on the Mk. 2, VR3 on the delay board adjusts the delay clock. lots of
fun there.

I'm sure the Mk. 1 must have some easy ways to modify the chorus
circuit...anyone like the idea of adding a chorus input?
