EX-800 button restoration

EX-800 button restoration

2019-08-27 by domgoold@...

i'm having problems with the panel buttons not triggering consistently.
think this is an old issue, but i can't seem to search past conversations for tips on how to resolve this,
or find anything in the files.

i remember that these are not common parts, and don't really want to have to replace them if i can avoid it.

what are the maintenance tips for this ?? ;-)
can the buttons be opened? would like to sort this out before/at same time.
thanks
D

(this is the pre-amble to installing the mods: checking it over, finding it's dumped all patches,
remembering my buttons are cranky, etc. - have it open; it programs normally, audio and
everything seems ok. in fact my battery socket holder fix hasn't held, and needs resoldering)

you will need to be extremely careful when pulling the switches apart.

and you will need to be extremely careful when disassembling the switches. There is a very small copper/tin circular disk inside which are very easy to lose.

But they can be cleaned so that the buttons will work like brand new again.

there is a document that explains the process on the Yahoo group files section: https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/korgpolyex/files/2%29%20EX-800/Servicing/

There are no photos in the document. But it does describe the process quite well.

thanks - i realised after posting that there ARE files in the EX800 folder( which i'm having trouble downloading, will try again in a bit).

video was very useful ! i have already managed to get the caps off, but it hadn't occurred to me that the switch itself disassembles. all makes sense now.

funny though that ranzee doesn't show us how to remove the black square cage supports :-)

i have a couple with a fairly weak click - not the ones i expected.
looks do-able, i'll see how i get on with it.

SECOND issue here, is that my buttons are pretty yellowed. wondering if the peroxide trick might bring them back - or do i even want to bother, if it could weaken the plastic... not sure if it's a permanent fix, either. can live with it, i s'pose. main thing is getting proper triggering back.

ok, so i found out how to get the black cage off - had to use fine penknife blade to unclip the side retainers.
that went ok on this first one. but i'm going to have to watch that vid again, because i'm having no joy pinching
the white button mechanism. not coming out at all :-( ... will report back on progress... do not want to screw this up, most of these work reasonably well, so i don't want to end up with worse than before !

ok - DONE :-)
will see whether it's made any difference later.

think i'll forget about the peroxide, don't want to push my luck:
those caps are the most fragile part of the job, and can either end up with a little
split in the notch, or a scratch in the surface of the side, that affects the down
press/release action. had to file a couple of scratches out lightly with emery paper.

reckon those could be 3D-printed, for funky colours and revamp? 8-D

the yellowing is permanent. Don't mess with it.

your best best for crimping and removing the stem are round nose long pliers.

The radius must fit inside the stem flange! Don't try to use larger round nose, they won't work. I bought a small pair specifically for this.
