EX800 vs Poly800 Eprom differences

EX800 vs Poly800 Eprom differences

2019-06-04 by studio_1a@...

Hi, I now have a non-working stock EX-800 it fires up but no sound. Just wondering what are (if any) differences between the ex800 and poly800 Eproms. Obviously there is no joystick so the D/A calibration can be adjusted to 1.986v on IC10 pin7 but no upward/downward pitchbend...but wondering if I can swap a poly800 eprom in there OR install the EX800 motherboard in the poly800? Also noting that the midi is not working on the EX800. Circuit #20 EG control waveforms up to IC12 are ok so far..

Any help or ideas appreciated.

thanks

So, I've installed a poly-800 eprom marked #830236 into the EX800 and was able to calibrate the unit, all waveforms accounted for. The EX-800 eprom is marked #840206 is that the appropriate one..? if it is then it looks like its not good, Does someone have a BIN of the EX-800 eprom ??

Thank you

Re: EX800 vs Poly800 Eprom differences

2019-06-08 by studio_1a@...

Well after installing the newly programmed eprom it still did not work, but strangely enough it works fine with a Poly-800 eprom. I found another version of ex800 eprom, will try that tomorrow. I wonder if eprom labeled 840206 is correct one for ex800?

"Is eprom labeled 840206 the correct one for ex800?"

Yes, it definitely is the correct EPROM for an EX-800.

When you say, "it still did not work", does that means blank displays? Or no switch/keypad actions? Or no MIDI response and no sounds?

Hey Mike, what I meant was, it fires up and all but there are no sounds even after I re-program a few sounds manually there's still nothing, the board is Klm596-7. I noticed that with the EX-800 eprom (now two different BIN files) I wasn't getting CPU Res6.5 but all other waveforms are present, So I went on a replaced a few IC's IC26, DTA1 and a few others but still no Res6.5. I popped in the Poly800 eprom and everything works CPU Res6.5 pulse is present from IC26 to IC24 and the few sounds I programmed manually are playing..I find this very strange that I have to use poly800 eprom, for me the differences should be minor between the two, but I don't understand, do you?

Hi there,

The CPU won't get any RES6.5 interrupts unless MIDI bytes are being received. And unless you're sending a large number of MIDI messages, you probably won't see the interrupts on your oscilloscope and definitely not on a logic probe.

The differences are minor. The board you're using is perfectly OK in an EX-800. The circuit diagram is identical between Poly-800 and EX-800.

The only difference in the code between the ROM's is that the Poly has keyboard scanning routines and EX-800 does not. And the EX-800 has sysex functions and the Poly-800 does not.

Ok this could turn out to be an interesting fact, I have captured all 11 waveforms from A>L from the KLM596 schematic on my Tektronix scope including the said CPU RES6.5 without any midi hookup at all and it looks identical, this from my POLY800 KLM596-4 w/830236 eprom(1). The EX800 KLM596-7 also works with the same eprom(1) and same waveforms confirmed.

Now, and I'm just trying to figure out the EX800 issue, is it then that because the EX800 does not have a keyboard the 63B50 waits on a keyboard pulse thru RX_data first to send /IRQ pulse to CPU RES6.5? I'm pretty sure the RES6.5 is necessary as I can witness this on my POLY800 without any midi,

Is that the correct process for the EX800 ?

Because I did hook up a controller keyboard to the EX800 and got no sounds from it even after manually programming a few, that's when replaced some IC's and finally swapped eproms and confirmed the KLM596-7(EX800 & eprom(1)) was working fine in my Poly800. Then programmed 2 new EX800 #840206 eproms and still no sound and no RES6.5,

Tonight, I will put the Poly800 aside and concentrate on the EX800 pulses,

I'm pretty sure its not the eprom but something has to give..

There is no electrical connection or link between the keyboard scanning hardware and the MIDI UART. None - zip - zero.

The Poly and the EX behave exactly the same with or without the keyboard cable plugged in.

The problem lies somewhere else.

Are you using the same power supply on each synth? Do you swap them over?

Well, I figured it out, the EX-800 eprom is actually working but slightly different that the Poly800 eprom.

I even installed poly800 keyboard in the EX800 and got my CPU RES6.5.. good to know!!

I'm certainly glad I figured it out on my own.

Have a good one

what was it ? and active sence message or a status byte poll that still remained similar?

I am glad you got it working but your email does not actually explain how or what. Can you explain in a few more words what you did?

If you had installed a Poly keyboard into an EX800 with an EX800 EPROM, the keyboard would not work.

If you installed a Poly keyboard into an EX800 with a Poly EPROM, the keyboard would work.

But none of that explains how you resolved/fixed your problem.
