Install issues and possible further queries

Install issues and possible further queries

2019-03-11 by pizzicato2007@...

Hey there,

New user, but I’ve been parlaying messages back and forth via email to Mike and the person building my Hawk 800/ Atomahawk mods over the past few weeks. It’s been a heck of a ride so far (I’m totally incapable of doing these things myself, the last time I soldered was assembling R/C car battery packs in 02). I wanted to shoot some things that have happened and see if I could get any possible feedback/ assistance.

1) error 3 hasn’t gone away just yet, after installing the new boot ROM. however, I acknowledge I did skip a step and didn’t do the chip swap (moving from one socket to the next and doing a check, it’s on Sourceforge forums). Is that a mandatory step?

2) after getting errors 4/5/6 sorted out, I noticed a bizarre noise in my patches. To describe- on note trigger, there’s a bunch of white noise, and I can almost, but barely hear the oscillators. After the ADSR stage or note release, it goes away completely. I made sure the Atomahawk settings and global settings were at the appropriate default (this should be latest firmware 2.66 boot 2.00). I’m sincerely hoping my builder didn’t fudge something up severe.

3) the last octave on the keyboard is sending midi for sure (using global settings to ensure), but isn’t generating sound.

4) sometimes I noticed one voice chip will ring clearly then the next one will be enveloped in the noise.

This synth was fully serviced with replaced patches and internal battery mod early 2016. It was a junker when I bought it fall 2015, about to die. When I got it fixed it was perfect (even got lucky with a new joystick from the repair shop). At this time, I’m hoping nothing fatal happened, and I hope you all can help.

Best,
John

Hi John,

MH - you must change the chips. It is mandatory. If it wasn't mandatory, it wouldn't be listed as a step in the process.

MH - sounds like you might not have set up global parameter 58. Your kit is the latest version, so global parameter 58 MUST be set to one (1). This is also mandatory.

3) the last octave on the keyboard is sending midi for sure (using global settings to ensure), but isn’t generating sound.

MH - I think you might be talking about the bottom octave. In which case, check that global parameter 37 is set to 0.

4) sometimes I noticed one voice chip will ring clearly then the next one will be enveloped in the noise.

MH - sounds like you have FM-800 engaging. Set global parameter 58 (see 2 above) and change patch and see what happens.

Doesn't sound like anything is wrong with your Poly. You just need to get it set up with good global and patch parameters.

/Mike

Hey Mike,

Extended parameter 58 is set to 1, but I’ll check again if I am doing it correctly. Thanks for the bottom octave tip, I’ll check to make sure it is in place, as with FM-800. Once those are in place, I’ll check in about the boot ROM- I’m too fidgety to do that myself. I figure I’d have to do it all over again once I do that, right? Thanks for the help! :)

Yes, you will have to go through the process again.

Because the process writes the boot code into the software ROM. Then you swap the software ROM (which has the boot code) into the boot ROM.

If you can boot up, then you write the software back into the HAWK, at that point, you're writing the software into what used to be the boot ROM.

I hope that makes sense.

So send the boot code.
Swap the chips.
Write the software again.
Set up global parameters (especially 34 and 58).
Upload patch banks or create your own patches.

Ok, so my global 58 was set to 1, there’s still so much noise, it didn’t fix much, there was improvement when I just played with the presets, but there was still significant noise (I turned noise off, and fiddled with cutoff). I did take a look at the install of the Atomahawk, two resistors were upside down. Is that crucial? How do I add photos to this stream btw? I never use Yahoo groups.

Also how do I

The resistors need to be in the right locations. But if the resistor bands are reversed in their correct positions, that doesn't matter.

Set all extended parameters to zero and go from there.

I think I am getting a lot closer in fixing up the patches, thanks for all the help thus far Mike!!

But I do have more questions/ guidance/ suggestions- So I tried zeroing all extended parameters out. Right now, on original parameter 18 (I think that's the whole or double mode), when I set a patch to whole mode, I'll hear the FM-800 or some sort of  fixed pitch oscillator running in the background. Again, everything is zeroed out on the extended parameters. Nothing crazy is going on like the second DCO being able to act as an LFO or something right?

I plan on posting some audio/ video on Instagram, I will make sure to send a link to this thread.

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: Install issues and possible further queries

If you zero out most of the extended parameters and you still here distortion then you need to check the AtomaHawk hardware install.

Especially, check the 10 way ribbon cable that goes from the HAWK to the AtomaHawk. If that is reversed, which I've seen some people do, then the AtomaHawk won't operate.

At this point, I suggest opening up your Poly and taking photos so that we can eyeball the installation.

I did- in the first bank, those good patches (11 & 15) I was able to tame the sounds, and get some unique textures. I love the SLFOs. Everything else sounds rough. I’ll be taking pics of the install tonight.

If you haven't loaded up Banks 2,3 ,,& 4 yet,  I would go ahead and do them too.

May not make a bit of difference, but I think I recall I had to load all the banks up to get that noise to stop.

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: Install issues and possible further queries

You need to load patch banks or else most of the patches are going to sound terrible. Like synthetech said.

I notice your first patch 11 has DCO harmonic modulation but other than that, it sounds clean.

So set patch 11 with no DCO modulation.

Then use that patch to run through the tests on page 14 of the AtomaHawk installation instructions.

Hey all, sorry for the late response!

Just to clarify I did load all of the patch banks, and the noise was still there, but I was able to salvage and edit one patch to use for testing purposes (originally Bank 1's patch 15 zeroed out, then I added the modulation to make patch 11).

I will try what you mentioned out of course. It was a busy weekend, I didn't get time to take photos of the build/ install even. Hopefully this week?

OK, so I tried submitting stuff on Friday, but I don't know if it loaded (tried to upload eleven pics). So here is try #5?

Here's the attachments of the install. Orientation is technically upside down- I have the keybed on the table.

Through further exploration and play, it seems that something is really up with oscillator 2. when in double mode with osc 2 volume down, everything is cool. Once I turn on any volume for that oscillator, I can't hear it, only that particular noise I have discussed. Again, everything is zeroed out.

Here is video link of proof.

Here's the install. if these are too close up, let me know, I'l fix appropriately.

I believe you might need to check that the capacitors underneath the AtomaHawk board are bent over so that they do not come into contact with the Atomahawk.

Especially the capacitors top left under the AtomaHawk. I just ran into this problem myself.

No real rush, I am having a second set of eyes go over it with me this weekend, so I can actually learn to solder better as well.

Hey gang, hope everyone had a good weekend, I know I did!

So my friend went through the mod, and we deduced it was something with the Atomahawk mod (the solder job looked fine, but we both decided to take it off anyway). After taking it off, it worked fine! So I need to schedule time to shoot some quick shots of the atomahawk and upload it to that dropbox folder I previously made... Could it be something physical?  That's where I am with it.

I didn't get much time to take shots because I was finally getting to play it, and I must say, I am pretty satisfied at the base level. Now to get Atomahawk to work...

New query- what parts of the board are controlling cutoff and resonance? maybe that is part of the problem? Are there trimmers I may need to reset before reinstalling? Apologies in advance for reviving this dead thread once again.

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: Install issues and possible further queries

2019-04-26 by support

yes, there are trimmers. You can download the schematics from the files section.

However, if you have not touched them then there should not be any need to adjust them.

Did you check that the AtomaHawk board was not contacting the caps that are underneath? That is a definite possibility.

You also should double triple check the wiring of the AtomaHawk to the main board. Those wires are easy to connect wrong, swapped or even a single strand shorting a connection.

I got a chance to carefully review your photos.

I did notice that you had the HAWK board mounted on the posts towards the rear of the case. You cannot mount the HAWK there because the EFX chorus board is too close and the HAWK will interfere with the audio. You can mount the board there only when it is inside a MK2.

How is your testing coming along?
