Korg Poly 800 issues - trying to do a factory reset, only get error message

Korg Poly 800 issues - trying to do a factory reset, only get error message

2016-04-07 by carl.holmberg@...

Well the title sums it up. A couple of months ago i bought a poly-800 mk1 in very good condition, it worked perfectly - but then i forgot to change the batteries so it reseted into only white-noise-patches. :(

Now I'm tryning to transfer the original patches back into the synthesizer with a WAV-file from analog.no, and it does'nt work! I try adjusting the volume, but I can't find one that works. Anyone here who have done this that can share their experience? With lower volyme, the LED blinks, but it does not give me any message at the end, still displays "VRFY". At higher volumes, I get "ERROR", the higher the volume, the quicker the "ERROR". I've tried to find a sweet spot in between, but there does not seem to be any. Do you use a mono 3,5 mm cable or a stereo one? Do you have a wav-file that you know works? And what kind of software do you use to play it (I have a mac)?

:(

/Carl

Have you tried changing the HI/LOW level switch on the From Tape input to get a different range of levels?

Display shouldn't read VRFY when you load data - only GOOD or ERR.

Check this:

- Mono cable goes from output of audio device to FROM TAPE on Poly 800. Don't use jack reductions, it can have bad contact.

- On Poly 800: TAPE ENABLE, WRITE ENABLE. Set level as necessary - on Poly 800 switch, and in audio device. Press LOAD button, start to play audio with data.

It must work. If not, elimination method is the best to find a problem:
- try different audio device
- try different cable
- try different record
- try different level

I wouldn't use computer or MP3 digital player for playing data file - D/A converters can change data. Any small old cheap portable cassette recorder should work.

Good luck.

I’ve had the same problem with my original Poly 800 for years.  I’ve also found that the analog signal from cassette tape seems to be more reliable than the computer or mp3 digital output, but honestly, until I read Daniel’s explanation below I never made the D/A converter connection.  Theoretically, saving as a WAV file should work fine, but it fails more frequently than not.  Of all the digital “saves” I have done over the years, I think only one or two have ever “VRFY’d” successfully.  The only reason I haven’t done a MIDI SysEx upgrade is because I’m scared to death of screwing it up.

I’ve been using an MP3 player for years with no problem loading or saving with the Poly-800. I can’t say that I’ve ever bothered using the Verify function, but it seems extremely unlikely an MP3 player could change the data. It’s just playing an audio file. Which reminds me, there is no way Verify is ever going to work if your memory is empty. I believe it tries to match what is coming in the From Tape input with what is in memory. It will never match. Just skip the verify and try Load.

Wav file has worked for me too, no problems, on an ex800. I use Ableton, out thru a Focusrite Scarlett, quarter inch jack lead to an eighth inch converter.

Mp3 player should work fine, just make sure there's no EQ adjustment or loudness setting or other such option on playback.
I play back from the track at about three quarters on the channel fader (and full volume on the master channel fader).
See manual for High and Low level switch settings (I set to Low since I am on line out).

Not employed the verify function, since I have not gotten an error...

Only done this twice I believe...

You may have slight dirt or oxidation in your tape input. Insert and remove a cable a few times, possibly a spray of deoxit if you have it handy.

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: Korg Poly 800 issues - trying to do a factory reset, only get error message

2016-04-12 by Michael Hawkins

I think Daniel's advice is perfect except for the last bit about MP3 and D/A.

Also, the VRFY function compares the parameter values AND a checksum that was calculated using actual memory data values including unused bits in the parameter bytes. As a result, you cannot use VRFY as some kind of parameter verification test. It's purpose is to ensure that what you dumped to tape has been actually recorded on tape (or recorded by MP3).

So just use LOAD and don't worry about VRFY unless you are trying to check that your SAVE actually worked.

/Mike

Success!

Me and my friend finally got it working. We went through different volume levels and it worked with the WAV-file.

Thanks for all the help!
