is Grit still here?

is Grit still here?

2015-09-28 by domgoold@...

Hi messag for grit - who? offered 3D printer  parts ? (seem to recall)
(was this the guy asking for a ex800 button to copy?)

this is offtopic - it's about Yamaha RX5 sound cartridges he proposes to make.
(there's a great project for rx5, modding a cartridge to load custom sounds
via USB...)

>look pretty d*mn good :) (even if it's only a graphic ! )

grit has been busy. He has 3D printed knobs for Poly too.

And replacement strap pegs.

Yes, still here and I'm still also keeping a lookout for a EX800 to measure the buttons but haven't seen them come by on the 'regular channels'

In the meantime I've indeed been working on 'retrokits' (finally found a use for the domain name www.retrokits.com which I had reserved for much too long) the Retrokits are (for now) rom expansion modules for the RX5. Here's a sample from the 808 version:

Retrokits RK808 sample

And here a picture of the real-life cartridges:

The carts on the photo; on the left there is the shapeways version without embossing and on the left there is a prototype from a Ultimaker 2 printer. The embossing on the ultimaker looks a bit lo-res but I'm confident they will look good on the SLS printers like Shapeways use, even in standard material.

The cartridges use a flash rom but a programmer to update/replace kits is a future plan which will depend on how many people are actually going to own a RK cart. For now I will compile some classic drum machines and probably contemporary sound carts, or carts on request for those interested.

but - thanks for the pickup on these 3D projects guys, I hope it will be of use to some people.

I have an EX800 with buttons to use.I have a micrometer too so I can probably do alot of the measuring but if you don't trust me I can send you a button on loan.

And, my preference would be to redesign the display/keypad board using modern switch units. That way, people can drop an entire board replacement rather than trying to screw with switch units that a) get crud inside them that makes them unreliable and b) have to try to deal with them when they are broken or damaged.

The board that I have right now has two damage switches and there really isn't anything I can do with them except surround them with hot glue which doesn't work very well anyway.

I would be happy to design the board.

This is somewhat similar, but I've taken out the part of the embedded teensy because I wanted to keep the cartridge in traditional format. I changed the circuit somewhat so the memory can be flashed later on from the cartridge connector.

I'll have to see how many people will buy a cart like this and will check later on if it's worth it to design and build a programmer connector for it. A programmer expansion would also require good software to go with, all and all a task at itself. I decided to phase it out...

well that's a very cool mod project by gligli, and presented
with own editor/converter, you can't ask for more :) (-you
could do the carts add-on  ready, and sell teensy kits afterwards..)

just a thought (soz for ongoing offtopic..) :
could you not  'print' the cartridge as a metal mould instead?
this is one of the expnsv  parts  of  manufacturing  process;

then do vacuform locally with..?polyprop' or whatever it is.
you can do limited runs more easily that way.(you could even
carve  your mould out of MDF  :p  ..)
or is that what you're doing  anyway? thinking of printer, doing
carts 1x1 :) ...

n-e-weh.. i'll definitely have one please if i can be less skint in
time for production, and i've a friend  who'll jump on it too
-> he has *the*original*rare*808*cart*

what the RX5 lacks is thin hihats, so this is just the ticket.
wow exciting
(hey shouldnt this be on yamblackboxes...)

Hey Mike,

I'll probably look at an EX800 soon and do some measurements. Let me know what kind of switches you have in mind, maybe I can make 2 variants, one for original and one for the 'HAWK-switchboard'

I'll do some research and see which would be best.
