Hi, I'm new here. I think I know why the battery issue is confusing.

Hi, I'm new here. I think I know why the battery issue is confusing.

If you look at the manual available from Old Crow's site, page 5 and
then page 40 seem to contradict one another. Page 5 implies the
memory is backed up by an internal battery (a battery other than the
C batteries), while page 40 implies that this isn't the case.
Somewhere, maybe here, I read that there's a capacitor that holds a
charge long enough to save the memory while the C batteries are
changed. That makes sense when reading page 40, but others who have
the 3v lithium battery can point to page 5.

Anyway, just thought I'd add this to the battery discussion. I just
won a Poly 800 off of Ebay and I'm waiting for it to arrive. As I
read more about the battery or lack thereof I'm becoming more and
more curious to know which version mine will be. I don't know if
I'll be glad it has a battery back-up or not. I know in any case
I'll have to replace the battery, or add a back-up battery because
mine needs "reprogram."

I just unloaded a Poly 61, and already miss it, so the Poly 800 ought
to make me feel right at home.

Actually both are true......either_Or.....BUT the only battery that is wired directly

to the RAM chip is the small internal Lithium 3v.....And since it does NOT have to supply the ENTIRE machine, as the Larger Batts DO .....( 'C' or'D' type...can't remember which...the large compartment that hold 6 or more -cells ) , then it can be expected to last much longer...5 years is typical......If wired differently, The whole Korgs drain would wipe it out in less than one hour ! ( ridiculous, since you cannot extract 5 volts the entire machine needs from 3 v) ...Refer Drawing......

Anyway.....I've wired many of these beasties myself, so I do know the above to be true !

Msg 565 ( or there-abouts ) on the KORGPOLYEX Group details more ...

Cheers

Dan

Right. I wish I could make total sense of what you wrote, but your
basic point seems to be that there is a 3v lithium in all Poly 800s,
and that it can't power the entire board by itself, correct? If this
is what you're trying to say, then I know that. My point is that it
seems to be a matter of debate whether the Poly 800 has a memory
battery or not. I've been reading up on the issue for the past few
days now here and from all over the internet. The most sane
statements I've seen is that the Poly 800 mk1 went through several
revisions and at some point a memory battery was added into the
production units. The PC board has always had a space for it, but
not all Poly 800s had the battery installed.

Still, there seems to be folks who are adamant that the Poly 800 mk1
didn't have a memory battery, while other folks say all Poly 800s
did. Neither is clearly true, which is neither here or there to my
point, which is that the matter is exacerbated by the Poly 800 manual
with regards to what pages 5 and 40 say.

Just curious. was that "61" midi? I bought something like it for
$1500 just before midi came out. Whoops. I have an EX 800 who hasn't
had battery change for centurys. Maybe original?

No, it wasn't MIDI. They released the 61m, which was the same board
but with MIDI, and you could get a MIDI kit to install into the
original 61s at the time. I had it since the late '80s until a few
weeks ago and never really needed MIDI for it, although it would have
been nice.
