Need Help Diagnosing a sick Poly

Need Help Diagnosing a sick Poly

2015-01-26 by sread@...

I recently bought a non working Poly 800 MK1.  The previous owner said it made strange noises.  I thought I could load the factory patches (like I have before) and bring it back to life.  No joy. I tried that several times to no avail.

So far I have replaced the batteries and loaded the factory (WAV) patches and it still does the following:

Some patches make a low volume sound/noise - others do not.  The filter and other parameters available on the grid seem to affect a change in the sound but it is hard to say if they are working correctly.

Any ideas?

Thank You

Did you get "GOOD" on the display after sending the default patches to Poly?
Did you have "program write" switch set to "enable"?

Do all keypad functions work? Can you write patches? Can you enter sequencer mode by setting sequencer enable switch? Does all notes play? Do you hear tones with correct pitches? Does joystick bend work?

Have you had a look inside Poly to see if there's any battery leakage, water or other physically damage?

Are you sure you're using the correct power adapter?

Great questions.  Thanks for the response.  I can answer most of these.

I did get a GOOD on the LCD after the Load (write was enabled) - although after going through the parameters for the factory patches, they did not match.  Joystick and sequencer seem to work and so do all the keys (they all make a noise).

I have not tried to write a patch (I'll try that).  Looking inside, everything looks good (no apparent damage).  The pitch is interesting because some of the patches that make sounds are wobbly.

I'll see if I can write patch and check the other things and post back...

Hi,

mine does this currently (well it sounds like it's the same as yours). However the cause is basic (in my case), so please excuse me if I mention something obvious that you are probably already quite aware of. I'll mention it just in case...

Are the sounds in the patches different every time you switch it off and on?

Can you program a patch to make it make a sensible noise, even if lost after a power cycle?

Because that's what mine does currently. It has no battery backed RAM and so on any power cycle it loads up with random junk. Some patches make weird noises, some do nothing. But you can program it to make sounds, because it is essentially working fine in that respect.

I thought mine was broken, so did the previous owner, so they gave it to me many years ago. I've not used it since but the HAWK kit will be breathing a new lease of life into it soon :)

I suspect your Poly has got the battery powered RAM, so it's something more complex.

But just in case...

All the best, Louis

Here's an update:

After checking the parameters for the factory patches, I noticed they were not correct. So I manually entered in patch 11 and low and behold it made sound (it was a string patch).  However it was still wobbly - like the joystick was engaged up or down - but it was not.

Also, after pressing the Write button and going to patch 12 and then back, everything I entered was gone (i.e. leads me to think the memory is not working).

I should mention that this version of the mainboard does not have the dime sized battery.  It only have the 6 C batteries.

And you disabled the memory protect switch before trying to save the patch data?

When you press the write button, you have to enter the patch number that you want the current sounding patch to be written to.

Pressing Write alone does not write anything.
