EX800 Buttons

EX800 Buttons

2003-07-18 by dirtyhertz

Hi. I was just checking if anybody knew about replacing (or maybe
just cleaning) the progamming buttons. Some of mine are unreliable, so
programming really sucks! I was also thinking that maybe it would be
possible to remove the up & down value buttons, and replace with a
fader, like poly800 and dw8000. I just got this from my friend for
cheap, and was thinking of messing around with some mods, so if you
know about some interesting projects I'd like to find out!

Thanks

You could add an angular encoder and have that trigger the up/down buttons.
Wouldn't generate a true slider, per se, but that would give a knob with 360
degree rotation that would change the values as you twist.

Making a true slider would require playing with the firmware...

Another option, for the Ex/MkII users, would be one of those programmable
knob/slider midi controllers. Wait... there is a midi controller value for
data entry, anyone know if the MkI would respond to that?

you need to take it apart and spray contact cleaner into the switches and then press them continually until they stop sticking. my ex800 was in a fire and the buttons were messed up
with the fire retardant shit. whatever you do don't use the radio shack "tv tuner control cleaner and lubricant". i tried that 1st and it only made it worse. took multiple applications
of contact cleaner to restore functionality. it's been working great ever since - about two years so far.

programming sliders(or knobs) are a great idea. anyone done this? i do live programming and the buttons suck for that. actually, they're not bad because they force you to do slow
sweeps, and thus, retain dynamics. be nice to have the option tho'.

EX800 Buttons

So I've visited Pieter today for his EX800 and he was so kind to lend me 'the apparatus'. I've made some measurements and this is what is comes down to:

Knob EX800 by grit on Shapeways

I might want to clean it up a bit, but I always think the price for those little 3D prints is pretty steep ah well.. it's probably because I'm Dutch ;-)

I would advise ultra detail prints, I've enabled the regular 'polished flexible plastic' but I'm not sure this material will cut the detail. Expect to do some sanding to get the same finish as the original on both.

You are the man, ultragore.

Thank you for giving life to my disabled EX8000!!

it's.. beautiful.  thankyou very much, i will definitely order some of these.  custom colours!

i wonder if it's possible to get the bezel that they sit in?

Re: EX800 Buttons

Sorry Pieter... they made me do it, I dismantled the EX800 and measured the bezel as well:

I've also looked for other switches which would replace the whole thing, this comes closest:
NKK Switches JF15CP2C

but just a tad to big and the wrong footprint. If there's a widely available switch which has a 4pin 5mm footprint I could adapt the 3D design to match that switch.

ultragalore, you are a *star*  :)

can you do them in  other colours? :)

(what's happened with the rx5 cartridge? available?

ok, I added a bunch of colors in the shop

Looks like the original one, if that's the case it would fit.

I just noticed it's free shipping on Shapeways this week, the code is : FREESHIPNOV

I'm going to print a few knobs, let's see how they work out...

Re: EX800 Buttons

so you have to print each one individually? how long, typically,
for eg: a knob?

can you print in different materials? like, only plastic/a polymer?
can you overlay a 2nd matrial? (soz just ruminating. i love those
pots with rubber covering :) )

this is why i mentioned vacu-forming. i don't know what
thickness and rigidity can be achieved with that, though.

ie: if you could print in  a heat resistant material, you might
only need to print once, and use it as template/mould.
-for other things, would not be relevant here.

you know how expensive it is to engineer metal moulds
for manufacturing, 3k+ for something simple, completely
impractical for anything like this, etc etc.
