Joystick ???

Joystick ???

2014-03-02 by <korgpolyex800@...>

Someone (cyllall?) just posted pictures of work being done on a joystick. Looks like it's a Poly-61 assembly.

Seems the question is if they're the same. No they're not but they're very similar.

Coincidentally, I just worked up a new PCB for the joystick assembly that uses a PS2 joystick assembly.

http://www.seeedstudio.com/depot/playstation2-analog-joystick-p-282.html?cPath=156_160

I am going to get a few boards made to to make sure it works. I figured I would offer the new joystick board as a replacement for the old type since I get quite a few people asking for replacement joysticks. Probably because they get smashed from time to time and can't be repaired.

Hi, possible to use this assembly with an ex800?

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

isnt the ex800 going forward without the need to drill holes in the case
how far ahead is the mods now for the ex800 with just midi cc to control everything
i am more intrested in cc control than drilling my ex800
i havent got round to moding mine yet so intrested in what options there are

The joystick is not related to the EX800 at all.

I am only talking about the Poly-800. I get regular emails from Poly-800 owners looking for replacement joysticks. The only thing I could do was point them at ebay.

Now, I have designed a board that takes a PS2 joystick. Now, I am going to see how good it is without replacing the knob. If it is really bad with the little PS2 knob then I'll replace it with a longer shaft so that it's more like the original.

Nothing to do with the EX800. If you want CC control of your EX800 then the HAWK kit is the way to go.

While on that topic, Im having a hard time understanding the Poly 61 (and Poly 800) joysticks.
Ill be removing the joystick completely in favour of regular wheels for pitch and pitch mod + FC mod pot.
The pitch pot I can just change to the new wheel, but I also want to split the frequency and pitch mod to two pots like another guy did, but the third terminal in the middle of the others and the service manual confuses me.

Re: [korgpolyex] Joystick ???

The fourth tap on the pots is a center short. It is supposed to ensure that the POT's send a "zero" when in the center position. But they are terribly unreliable.

So just ignore the center taps on the POTS. They are marked as "4" where the POTS go into the joystick board (KLM-599).

yeah you can see a possible issue with a shorter stick, less precise control -
but i've always wondered if those little PS2 mushroom things could have a
role as another control input device.
you get one on the hercules dj box, and it can be assigned as a midi control,
i think.
you could use the cick down action as an incrementor or something, to set
range of the x/y axes(?) - i still think a panel-mounted encoder rotary would
be nice instead of inc/dec - mainly for quicker hands-on edits if you don't
want to go to the PC or a control board. just my take on this- a novation remote
is the obvious choice otherwise(especially a keyboard on with the x/y+joystick).

Looks like it probably does the same thing for the Poly-61 as it does for the Poly-800. It's intended to "zero" the center position. Only problem is, the center tap is the fist to fail on those pots.

You could try and lift R54 and or R14 (temporary and very carefully) and see if it changes the behavior of the synth. I doubt it does.

RE: Joystick ???

No that didnt work, theyre obviously doing something.
It does zero as its at the middle point between the other two taps, but it also moves from 0-5 depending on wiper movement (theres 5K to both the 0 and 10K point).
If you look at the schematic (that I wont pretend to understand fully) theres nothing else from the pots connected to the LFO ( +/- 10 on the schematic) than the 4 line.
So Im thinking the 4th and 8th terminals is used as both a center and as mod amount somehow.
