Successful EX-800 Battery Replacement

Successful EX-800 Battery Replacement

2013-07-28 by moses_ybrs

Hooray!
Managed to graft a new battery holder on the to pcb of my EX-800 in place of the
dead one originally soldered in place. I can now save patches! :D

I was mislead by the seller who said "perfect working order, plugged it in
yesterday works fine." and forgot to mention that its battery was dead and the
half hour's worth of programming I gleefully did on receiving it/him/her would
be made redundant on switching it off again.

If anyone else also needs to swap out their original hard wired battery, here
are the tutorials I used, albeit for the Poly-800.

Feels good, doesn't it? Now you can do your own repairs, at least for some things...

You're using an instrument that *you* fixed, that uses a bit that *you* did. Good, eh?

Nice one man, well done,I hate changing bloody soldered batteries too!
If you need the factory presets (poly800) I can send them now as wav but sure you already have them.
Don't be so sniffy Gordon, not a bad job at all.

Oi! I'm not being sniffy ;-)
Replacing soldered-in batteries is the best place to start with repairing your own gear. Next up, sticky tact switches...

By tact switches do you mean the program buttons? Because yes these keep sticking on and generally not being very cooperative. Haven't looked into it yet though. Do you know of a tutorial somewhere?

@Metatone_2000 I haven't got up to resetting firmware or factory patches yet. Just reprogramming stuff from my last poly (a borrowed nord lead) into this puppy and generally having ball with new sounds atm. Are the files you mean the same as the sysex ones in the files section on this site or are they something more handy that you have?

Hi ya,

I think thats what he means. My EX-800 has the same problem on a few buttons, obviously the ones used most, you either have to hit them hard or wiggle them from side to side to get them to work, but I'm going to leave them be,they are not so bad that you can't use them and it sounds a nightmare to replace them from what I've read.
The wav I have is just the bog standard Poly800 presets which are actually very good especially  the one in 4-voice with a japanese tuned percussion sound with a string that comes in underneath.I'd imagine it's the same file as on group.

Hi,
Jason - fixing the buttons is not that hard. I first thought I could live with poorly functioning buttons, but they were really bad. And after I had cleaned them all, the difference was huge. It was like having a new machine! I'm sure replacing the buttons is harder than cleaning them.

Hi Sami, what did you have to do to clean them,I have never had my EX-800 apart,I guess this has been discussed on here before?

Umm yes the list file area has instructions but I did it on my own. And posted about it. I got some (lofi) video of the operation when it was sticky and difficult in the beginning...

I used dry cleaner, was it Kontakt Chemie... anyway, avoid oily stuff as they can absorb impurities over time.

Sorry,I must have missed most of them,I was reading some stuff on the net about fixing contact switches in general,I was thinking if I did it to just use the normal contact cleaner (like this:- http://www.maplin.co.uk/contact-cleaner-4153 or similar) on the end of an ear-bud,but I'd rather see (obviously) something specific.
I'll plow through the archived posts if I do it.

See instructions here: http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/1A35UQHaCKcFTgFADok1JmcC3OLk9_EKwikyhesw_gxP_SlMJhngkUHttlFvGB_E1HyYxUtjJMcF0pjAFAK4/2%29%20EX-800/Servicing/EX800-Button-Repair.pdf

It's under the servicing section of the EX-800 files area.
