POLY800 Mod Question: dedicated effects?

POLY800 Mod Question: dedicated effects?

2013-06-26 by daveyray913

Sorry I'm monopolizing the board lately but I'm just getting excited about getting my poly800 mod going.
Now that I have my beast all apart, given it a full spa treatment w/keys fixed, connections cleaned & repaired ( I'm also giving it custom paint and possibly led lights too) and circuit board mods coming soon as I get brave enough...

I was thinking of (cheaply) installing some form of a dedicated effects processor.

My Idea was taking something like a simple KORG Pandora Mini ( I know this is a guitar effects proc. and cheap but it's tiny and has LOTS of effects and I've messed with one and they sound fairly good) and sinking it somewhere into the body for dedicated effects. I was going to install it in such a way to make it easily by-passable, possibly even removable.
Other options: Alesis Microverb2/nanoverb, Various pedals I could tear the components out of.
(I have 3 old '80s analogue DoD effects pedals sitting around for chorus/delay/flange )

Any Thoughts/suggestions?

How about a line6 pocket pod?
http://line6.com/pocketpod/index.html
Not tried it myself, but my pod x3 is great..

Zoom have a new range out too..
http://www.zoom.co.jp/products/ms-70cdr/
Again I've not tried it, but my buddy's G3 is very impressive..

Good luck, Eanna

It's a great idea. You would need a switch to use either the old effects or the new ones.

Have a look at this video, it's very inspiring:

Those are great. They both seem much more capable than the Korg Pandora, I was leaning towards the KP because I liked the size/price of it but both the pocket pod and multistomp have features more in tune with what I was looking to do.

1-3 moog pedals is the route I'd love to go but I am but a poor biologist of limited resources :)

Thanks so much!

frankenkorg was my inspiration too,

Currently modding my poly mk1, and as I had an old nanoverb I'm hoping to fit that amongst other mods. The nano is 9v Ac though so will need a bridge rectifier to supply DC to the poly's input.

Mine is in mid build, converting linear pots to rotary, full rehousing, etc all parts are here, now onto a soldering marathon!!

Here's a recentish pic if you're interested.

I'll be uploading pics to the folders as I progress I reckon.

I'd love to see pics of yours as you tackle it!

Wow, I can't wait to see your project done. Complete new wood encasement?.... tre retro and quite BRILLIANT! Everyone's going to think you have some awesome bastard child of a mono/poly, Sequential Circuits Pro, and/or A Mini! :P
Yea, I think I'm making it easy for myself and just installing multiple power ports. It doesn't matter to me that I have 2 or 3 chords coming out for A/C, that's what powerstrips are for, though purists of aesthetics may scoff :) My dedicated effects module will be piggy backed, not integrated. I'm not planning a complete integration like frankenkorg, because I simply don't have that kind of skill.

Re: POLY800 Mod Question: dedicated effects?

2013-06-27 by gixxer1052

Thanks,

That's the plan, always loved the 70's wood enclosure looks of the pro 5 or mini moog etc, hopefully when I've finished it and stained it walnut and satin varnish it'll contrast well with the stainless switches and black knobs on white fascia (and the missus might let me keep it downstairs rather than in my loft studio heh)

It's being done on the cheap hence the pine, I have an aluminium whiteboard that still has the plastic coating, so that's the fascia sorted :) I'm using lazertran waterslide decals to get my design from illustrator and made the case bigger to accommodate the extra mods, moving of joystick and fx board.

I was hoping to include an overdrive into the circuit but not sure I have any room now, was thinking of maybe a simple diode clipping circuit on a switch where the vcf ext in mod is going, but not sure whether the voltage drop would be severe, I could do with better electronics knowledge really.

This weekend I'm cutting the side cheeks down and creating the angle required, routing out the slots for mainboard and rounding off edges and mounting the boards with a bit of luck. Also toying with the idea of a narrow piano hinge across the back edge so I could hinge up for easy access ;).

Anyway I've gone into my excited waffling mode! I do tend to go overboard when I mod stuff( did the same with my full size arcade mame cabinet, which the missus hates ha)

I'd like to see what you do, and what it sounds like as that's the main point of all these mods I suppose heh. I love it when people mod stuff for the better and let's face it, we wouldn't do it to a minimoog/pro 1 would we? ;)

Cheers

Kev

Re: POLY800 Mod Question: dedicated effects?

I wrote a huge reply just now but for some reason it's not showing, dammit!

Basically I'm shortening rest of the case this weekend and mounting the boards before I tackle the nightmare of soldering over 19 switches and 14 knobs, I have the looms made up with removable connectors already, not looking forward to drilling the mounting holes accurately either but I'm being patient and taking my time as I want this to looks the best I can.

Looking forward to hearing your fx mods, cheers again!

Re: POLY800 Mod Question: dedicated effects?

Thanks!

I'm taking photo's as I go along, I've added a few more today of the case build and mock-up.

Still some tweaking to do with the panel design (which incidentally will be on an aluminium whiteboard that was being thrown out of my work, brand new still with protective plastic coating, and there's enough of it to do 2 more panels... for when i probably mess up drilling the holes accurately on the drill press hah!.

When i get the wood cheeks shaped and routed out for the boards at the back, hopefully by this weekend, I'll start a new thread documenting everything, rather than hijacking dave's thread (sorry Dave!)

cheers,

Kev

BAH! It's all good. I'm more jealous of your idea than offended at the redirect. :) Cant wait to see it in action (we will settle for no less than vids!)

My Mods wont be as cool as most others here BUT, some will be MY unique mods, so I guess that'll keep me satisfied, and remaining a special little snowflake...just like all the other special little snowflakes....but I digress.

OK, HERE, I'll hijack this disscussion back in true attention-whoring yankee fashion!....

QUESTION: Can I install HAWK-800 and also MOOG-SLAYER type mods? ie: hands on, pot-dialed Freq/cutoff/reso ? Do they clash?

Danka Schon!

BTW: Find me on F/B,"Daveyray Schroeder" or "Jesse's First Time" (band) I have the beginnings of my POLY resurrection photos posted there publically,(if not I'll change it) ...So You don't have to friend me to see them...but we could all use more friends....just sayin'

Nevermind, read the instructions again (more carefully this time) on the ATOMAHAWK kit and found my answer: "5. If you have already carried out the original modifications, you can still install this kit and use the original controls in tandem with the AtomaHawk kit."

One of these days, I am going to get around to putting an FAQ together. In the meantime, you read the instructions and got your answer.

RE: <FAQ>……That is a most meritorious idea sir!

And BTW, I ordered my Hawk/Atomahawk Kits! After some minor repairs & cleaning I deemed my old, slightly singed Poly up to the task. It has a bit of a cliché ring to it but I think I'm calling this project "The Phoenix-800"
Also, If I mess it up, I guess I'll eBay or craiglist another one and try again. That's what's so wonderful about POLY/EX-800 modding. You can still pick up these synths for ~$200 USD.

( I also ordered the blue LEDs lights for the main display, couldn't resist)

You could get a "MIDI CPU" from Highly Liquid and make just about any individual knob or switch you wish for HAWK 800 parameter controls.

I've thought of doing a re-case like you are doing.. but do it with a SteamPunk theme to it.. like maybe use Nixie Tubes for the display.. have a ton of old Chicken Head knobs and some other early 20th Century test equipment components.
Maybe even use an old adding machine keypad of some sort for the numerical buttons.. (I'd love to use typewriter keys!).

If only I had a ton of spare time to do it.

Re: POLY800 Mod Question: dedicated effects?

That's the issue with me at present, with a little one on the way in 3 weeks and a three year old running about, I don't get a great deal of time. Give's me a fair amount of time to plan it all out though! :)

Steampunk Poly, that'd be awesome!! (go ooonnnn do it!!)

I've managed to cut the angles for the side cheeks now and the fascia is cut to size but that's about it at minute, manged to build the case so no screws are showing on front or sides.

it'll have to wait until next weekend now to mount the boards, I might smuggle them into work, get it on the bench and start the epic wiring marathon for the switches.

Re: POLY800 Mod Question: dedicated effects?

2013-07-08 by bimmerfan222

Something I meant to mention earlier-

if you want to use just one power supply for your Alesis and the Poly, just tap a 9v DC supply's transformer direct (pre-rectifier bridge) to get your 9v AC. Then use the rectified side for your 9v DC.
Just be sure you have enough Amps headroom from the one supply. A 1.5A supply might be enough to power both Poly and FX.
That might save you some space/headache of having two supplies crammed inside the new case.

I got a Roland JX1 dirt cheap awhile back in rough shape. Was missing the 12v AC power supply too. I took a normal 12v walwart I had around in my electronics junk stash, cracked it open, cut the wires from the rectifier circuit and resoldered directly to the transformers output.
Wallah! I had an instant 12v AC power supply for FREE! Saved me about $30 vs. buying an OEM Roland supply.
Still working fine today, over a year later. And sometimes its on for weeks at a time since I'm too lazy to reach back and turn the power strip off.

I did that in an emergency with a ZX81 power supply that was kicking around the computer repair place I used to work at, an hour before a friend's band were due on stage. Their Aleses HR16 had just turned up its toes and where were we going to get a new 9V AC power supply at 6pm on a Saturday in Aberdeen?

Well, my junk box obviously!

It lasted at least ten years until he finally sold the thing a few years ago (and immediately regretted it).

OUCH. So sad to hear. Ebay(US) lately has them for around $250 USD on ave (MK1), I've seen EX-800 go for as low as $150, but I supposed shipping to UK is a killer. I find them on Craigslist for about the same around here often. I kick myself hard when I think about the rummage sales (or thrift sales? I'm not sure what you call them there) where I've seen them at over the years for like $50-100, but I already had one so... didnt occur to me to grab another. :( If I only knew.... Here's a guy selling one 20mi from me for $200 which I may offer him $150 and go pick up this weekend.

Thanks! I'll give that a try. Right now I'm just fixing up the body, deciding on mods and waiting for my Hawk kit, and practicing soldering/desoldering on some old computer components I have laying around :)

Re: POLY800 Mod Question: dedicated effects?

2013-07-08 by bimmerfan222

all you really need is a simple plunger type Desoldering pump
some desolder braid and a small flat screwdriver

snag the deslder braid onto the IC pins and tug on it while you have it hot
that helps to free it up from the printed circuit board

Re: POLY800 Mod Question: dedicated effects?

2013-07-09 by daveyray913

Yes, thanks, got those from Radio Shack and they work splendidly.
There's several good Vids on youtube for this if anyone needs to see how it works. Pretty strait forward.
I needed practice because I'm getting old and my hands aren't as steady as they once were and last time I did fine soldering I didn't need a magnifying glass due to my eyes becoming far-sighted from my advancing years (Well, I'm only 41, but I'm a bit of a PC gamer and I think it's ruining my eyes)

Alas, they say you're only as old as you feel.....
Aw Crap...now I'm f@#$ing depressed.

Also toying with the idea of a narrow piano hinge across the back edge so I could hinge up for easy access ;).

2013-07-09 by AARON

I have to admit that the attractive price of the Poly-800 has led me to hoard them a little bit. I've got several.

I see them on eBay all the time, but unlike the previous poster, I rarely see them on Craigslist. Although the first one I ever bought I found on CL. Got it for $75! The seller said it wasn't working, but all it needed was to have its patches reloaded. On eBay, pricing really varies, but I'd say the average right now is about $225.

At the moment at least, the Poly-800 is by far the cheapest analog synth you can buy, probably because they're still quite plentiful and a lot of analog snobs don't respect them. But I say, grab 'em while you still can!

I'll keep my eyes open.
