The silence means "no we don't have a joystick for sale".

you'll have to scout ebay for one, and hope it's not faulty either.

we usually either fix the problem or install a replacement 10k joystick back in.

What's wrong with yours?

Yes! What is wrong with your joystick. Is it the potentiometer or the stick?

Hi group - does anyone know if the poly800 and poly61 share similar joystick assemblies, or of a mechanically compatible (or at least modifiable) replacement - I bought my p61 with a broken X/Y rocker and I'd love to replace it.

Cheers

As far as I know it's the same joystick but you will be very hard pushed to find one. They are rare. Also the potentiometers have a bypass built into them. There are no modern replacements that I know of for the potentiometers..

Thanks Martin - yes, not seen any of them available on any site or list. You are confirming my fears that this will be a fabrication job.

The potentiometers are fine, just the rocker assembly and X/Y fused because the previous owner super glued it up when he snapped it off (great huh).

I've managed to release the X/Y mechanism but had to sacrifice the circular disc.

I think I'll have to fabricate a replacement disc, stick the joystick back in, and then think about how to mechanically join the potentiometers(which will probably need some precision dremel work).

A project at least... but I have soooo many on the bench at the moment before I can use in studio.

Thanks again

Just in case you missed it, further below in this post is a link to a joystick repair that I did for the Poly-61. I still had the original joystick so I settled on using it in the repair job. There are also some notes with the photos describing what I did. The guy I bought the assembly from doesn't have a knob-less joystick any more. He only has a complete unit. Actually I think it looks better.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ALPS-2D-10k-Potentiometer-with-handle-for-Joystick-or-Industrial-use-/330846675357?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d07ffa19d

You remove the potentiometers from the new stick and put the old ones on instead. It's fiddly bending the tabs back that hold the pots on but can be done if you take your time. I also had to mill a larger hole out of the joystick holder for the new assembly. Luckily I have a crappy milling machine in the shed but it could be Dremelled.

Nice work there! And thank you very much for taking the time to retrieve information that I could have found if I'd looked :o|

Couple of question please:

  1. to confirm, you used the same joystick assembly as per the link?
  2. does the assembly come with those metal axis rockers, or did you have to build those?

Might cut the joystick holder by hand with a coping saw and metal guide - likely a better finish than dremel as those things can jump around

Cheers

It's the same joystick assembly I used apart from the fact it already has a joystick knob on it. I bought one that just had a shaft and re-used the old knob. Other than that it's the same.
It works as a 2 axis X/Y joystick just like the original.

RE: [korgpolyex] P61 joystick / korg poly 800 mk2 joystick

2013-01-27 by tim p

Fantastic. Just ordered one. Can't thank you enough as I was worried the P61 joystick job was going to be a bigger PITA.

The P61 I acquired has needed some TLC: it had envelope issues which were fixed with couple of op amp replacements. There was also a problem with a few of the keys. All cleaned up nicely though.

The final piece will be the joystick - and then I can install the midi kit.

Thanks again

thx so much for the reply! the problem is that on of the two the ALPS
potentiometer is broken...... so is it possible to find a new potentiometer? i've written also to the ALPS and KORG themselves with no solution :(
or is it possible to mount an other joystick? will it work?

Yes. The potentiometer has 4 pins. 1 pin is a bypass I think so when the joystick is in the middle no resistance value is sent. Maybe the potentiometer can be fixed?

it is mecanically broken :/ the thin layer of metal that does the contact has been angled by me tryng to clean it up........... cause it was working only in one direction (only pitch down).. then i used some lubrificant electrician spray and it worked quite properly for a couple of days... so after it stopped work an other time pitching up i have tried to clean inside with a screwdriver :/ from the hole where you seen the thin layer of metal, the contact.......... but i've angled it :/ and now it doesnt work either pitch up and down............................
i also dont know how to open the potentiometer without broken and also how to separate the joystick from the board :( and simply how to do :(

im sure that the potentiometers of the poly 800 have 4 pins not 3 :/ --- In mailto:korgpolyex%40yahoogroups.com, Martin Ator wrote: > > Just in case you missed it, further below in this post is a link to a joystick repair that I did for the Poly-61. it is mecanically broken :/ the thin layer of metal that does the contact has been angled by me tryng to clean it up........... cause it was working only in one direction (only pitch down).. then i used some lubrificant electrician spray and it worked quite properly for a couple of days... so after it stopped work an other time pitching up i have tried to clean inside with a screwdriver :/ from the hole where you seen the thin layer of metal, the contact.......... but i've angled it :/ and now it doesnt work either pitch up and down............................
i also dont know how to open the potentiometer without broken and also how to separate the joystick from the board :( and simply how to do :(

Are you building the midi yourself on vero board or do you have a kit?

It's the same joystick assembly I used apart from the fact it already has a joystick knob on it. I bought one that just had a shaft and re-used the old knob. Other than that it's the same.
It works as a 2 axis X/Y joystick just like the original.

Cheers

Just in case you missed it, further below in this post is a link to a joystick repair that I did for the Poly-61. I still had the original joystick so I settled on using it in the repair job. There are also some notes with the photos describing what I did. The guy I bought the assembly from doesn't have a knob-less joystick any more. He only has a complete unit.

Is it CHD? Yes, I can confirm, they have good products. I have their TR808 MIDI kit.
