Custom GUI MIDI controller for the HAWK800- Download Link Inside...

2012-12-09 by bimmerfan222

I started work on this Custom GUI controller for the HAWK800 built using "Ctrlr". It should work for V2.53 firmware on all models of Korg Poly/EX 800.

Here's the link to the zip folder. I tried to host the entire zip as one folder, but Google Drive seems to only allow you to download individual files from inside the zip folder..
The exe is 24MB. Font files are very small.

https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B_IDH8cQH_eNUlQtZ2MxNURKVWc

I highly recommend you install the custom fonts prior to attempting to use the GUI.. it may not look correct without the fonts I designed the GUI to work with.

This is a standalone version of a "Ctrlr" panel I have been working on.
I could use some feedback on it..
It is incomplete.. there are no Atomahawk controls on it, but just about everything else is there to click/twist/select to your hearts content.. including patch recalls to set most of the controls for you when you select a patch via the GUI.

If there is interest in this GUI, I might get back into it and finish it up.. or simply provide the editable files so it can be finished by someone else or customize it for yourself if you wish..
I just kinda ran out of steam on finishing it. Seems there is a lack of interest in the HAWK800 lately..

anyway, have a go at it and let me know what you think.

I like this editor! Do you plan to integrate the Atomahawk functions?

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, I plan to eventually dig back into the GUI and not only include Atomahawk control, but Mk2 Delay effects control as well.

My only drawback is that I don't have an Atomahawk in my Korg.. and my synth is a Mk1. So it makes it difficult for me to test the functions in development..
I may eventually get an Atomahawk installed in the near future, but I doubt I'll be buying a Mk2 Poly anytime soon.. I'd probably buy a EX800 before I buy another keyboard Poly 800.

Plus.. depending on how Mike develops the arpeggiator, I may be able to make some kind of GUI editor for the arpeggiator as well if he includes a sysex method to edit the sequence of notes used.
At the very least, a way to quickly choose up/down, down/up, random, quarter notes, eight notes, sixteenth notes, BPM setting.. etc.

Blaine,

Your GUI interface to program the HAWK looks great! I have specially modded my HAWKed Poly 800 by embedding a small laptop computer inside the keyboard itself. I would love to be able to use this interface with the computer inside the keyboard; however, the computer is quite old. It's running Windows 95, has 16MB of ram, Pentium 75MHz processor and has a screen resolution of 640 x 480.

Is it possible that you could modify the program to be able to run in Windows 95 and be able to fit in a screen resolution of 640 x 480? If you could I would be very grateful and post a video with the interface on youtube. You could also send me the source code and I could try to modify the program if you're okay with that.

Here is a video demonstration of my modded HAWK 800 with the embedded laptop:

(This video was created before I installed the HAWK 800.)

Thanks,

Thanks for the comment Ethan.

Unfortunately I don't think I'd be able to provide this GUI controller in W95.

I used an app called Ctrlr from http://ctrlr.org/
to build it.
The app is a full editor/custom controller builder. The version you see is a standalone version that the editor allows me to export from it.. that way it is locked from being altered.

When I get around to finishing it up, I will provide the standalone version and the full editor version I used to build it and the raw file for the editor... that way other people can tweak it the way they want it or to peek inside it to see how I made it.
I may also figure out a VST version as well.. but right now it's challenging enough to make the version you have seen built so far.

The editor is actually a LUA script based app. The hardest parts for me to do so far was to make the graphical ADBSSR EG and even more so, the patch dump request that sets all the knobs/switches and drop down menu's.. which is not fully completed yet.. it takes time to convert hex values from the dump to 0-127 or other values that Ctrlr uses.. (the HAWK patch dump values are the values you see in it's display, but it responds to a MIDI sysex controller as 0-127 values and such..)
I kinda ran out of steam after awhile, but all the knobs on the mock up synth, the dropdown menus at the top and the EG's all will auto set each time you select a patch via the GUI.
The lowermost parameters like Resonance and DCO modulation have not been activated to respond to a patch dump yet.

Really sorry I can't help you with the W95 port. :( I saw your synth awhile back and thought it was pretty cool though. :).

Id love to have a proper working version of this.
Waiting for my Hawk now, but it would save me tons of time as I was going to make a template for it anyway but dont know ctrlr, so if some kind person like you have already started and wants to share, all I can do is cheer you on :)

Thanks for the feedback.

I may get around to finishing it up.. I have to finish the auto setting controls (after a patch is called up) for the lower controls I had not finished yet, make the other two EG's have a graphical waveform and add in the Tomahawk controls.

I was kinda waiting to see if Mike might add in a arpeggiator, then I'd just work it in with the above work.

I did think of just posting a zip of the latest CTRLR release that the GUI would work with and the *.panel files so anyone could edit it the way they wish to.. but was thinking of only doing that with a finished GUI.. not the incomplete version I have so far..
But I'm not against posting it all up as is if anyone wants to try and dive in to help finish it :)

I also need to port it to VST so DAW users can integrate it in, if they wish.
This GUI is the first time I've ever done any real development work before to a product.. so it's slow and tedious for me.

One thing I do need to know is if a patch dump from a Tomahawk'd HAWK will work in a non tomahawk'd HAWK or visaversa.
I assume people out there with Toma'd HAWKs are not having problems with the GUI fetching a patch and setting the knobs?

I really need to just chuck up the xtra $$ and get the Tomahawk, install it and finish up the GUI with Toma support since just about everyone gets it along with the HAWK anyway.

Once it's all complete, I'll most likely ask Mike to host it on the SourceForge site so it's easier for people to find.

Im not doing the tomahawk (got the extra knobs in already so didnt bother) so if you do a first step and complete the basic setup I can help test from there.
Ive banged my head on max for live a bit, but failure rate is high.
Wouldnt mind taking a look at how its done even if I cant help much though, Im sure noone will critique an unfinished job, someone may even help :)

A: The patch memory structure is identical for a HAWK'd Poly with or without the AtomaHawk installed. All of the controls for the AtomaHawk work in the HAWK hardware/software regardless of whether the AtomaHawk board/kit is actually installed or not.
