HPF?

HPF?

2011-04-08 by k9k9dog

what do people think about (the possibility of) a HPF?
i've been studying the Juno quite closely for a few weeks,
especially the 'hpf', which is in fact a switch with 4
settings, inserted in the path *after* the lpf(although it
appears to be before, on the panel).

i don't know how the korg filter would lend itself to this,
but with a juno it can be helpful as a lowcut(and lowest
setting is a 'bass boost' using a bandpass). i've emulated it
reasonably successfully in software and understand how it works.
and if implemented, could be controlled and recalled(or disabled)
with logic switching. doesn't seem completely incompatible with
korg800 structure at all.

also wondering about some kind of limiter, as i read atomsmasher
saying it's a good thing to have around, with res settings...a
simple onboard circuit, is that worth thinking about?

Sounds interesting, does the poly800 have a high pass on the circuit already?

No, the NJM2069 OKI chip that was custom made for Korg does not have a HPF.

I would be willing and able to add both an HPF and a limiter into the AtomaHawk PCB design.

But someone else would need to provide the circuit design itself.

There must be some free circuits of those types around?? I was on a DIY effects site a while back that had tons of free circuits for just about everything imaginable.

OK! beware here, though: my question resulted from comparison
with the juno range, and the HPF setup on that is not an
ordinary highpass: it is a 4way switch, 0-3:
3 is the highest HPF setting, 2 lower, 1 is OFF/thru, and
4 is a type of bass boost.

not saying the poly800 needs to emulate a juno, but this is
how that config works. on the JU106/60/6, the HPF comes AFTER
the LPF(and VCA), contrary to what it looks like, and on the
Alpha JU, it comes before.

the bassboost results from a type of LPF/band thing (linkwitz-
-riley?no butterworth!)...here, check this out, if you are on PC
(sorry macz...it is synthedit), it is a plugin i made recently:

http://www.box.net/shared/v6m7j3n5n6

'DC0-6' (wa-hey: 1626 downloads as of today...)
it isn't entirely accurate, of course, but you might have
some fun with it. check it out with bomer's mousekeyboard
inputting chords via midi - might give a few thoughts about
chord memories/sequencing, etc.

the ex800, doesn't lack bass, of course, but i reckon this
HPF, allied with some element of? ringmod?/waveshaping? is
what gives the juno it's sound.

an all-the-way HPF could be interesting too. bear in mind that
what i did to obtain the 'bassboost' was entirely separate from
the HPF part.

and if a HPF can be added, why not a multimode?
hpf/more lpf/band pass/reject?
