Hawk 800 Mod issues

Hawk 800 Mod issues

2009-09-28 by indyisking

Hello

I recently installed the Hawk 800 into my Poly 800 MK1. Everything went as planned per the directions up to the flashing process. The flash went as planned but when I hit prog/para after I end up in 11 H instead of 11 P.

There is also a constant mid/high sweeping sound regardless of keys being pressed. When I use the mood slayer cutoff to about 50% I can make it mostly become silent. The sweeping alters when buttons that transmit midi signals are pressed (the poly/chord/hold buttons, moving the sequencer speed slider, etc). I have tried reflashing it multiple times including with the beta software version. Do you think I may have damaged the circuits? Or could it be a loose connection from removing the board? Also if someone could send me a MK1 sysex patch dump I'd greatly appreciate it so I can test if it will load up sounds.

Thanks a lot,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Set Extended Parameter 87 to 00 and the sweeping filter will stop. This is the EG3 sync source and rate control. After the flash it will midrange to 31. Setting it to 00 will stop the free run and trigger the filter from key events only.

The 11 H just means there aren't any patches loaded/saved yet. Go to the files section and find a Mk1 sysex dump and load it. Slow the transfer rate for the dump way down so the flash will have time to write. When the Hawk-800 accepts a good sysex transfer it will send F0 42 21 0C F7.

It sounds like you did a good job wiring up your kit! :-) Fran

Re: [korgpolyex] Hawk 800 Mod issues

2009-09-28 by Michael Hawkins

I will update the owners manual to discuss this.

Thanks to Fran for providing the answer before I could !

When you first install the HAWK-800, the flash memory that is used for the patch storage contains alot of invalid data. So the HAWK-800 automatically validates all of the data and when it finds parameter values that are outside of the normal range it resets the value to half the maximum. As Fran points out, parameter 87 is the EG3 retriggering parameter. In most cases, this parameter will be off (zero). And also, every patch can now be stored with the Poly mode as either Poly, Hold, Chord or Slide. Parameter 88 sets that.

So I recommend that you download either an EX-800 or MK2 sysex bulk dump and set all of your patches up.

Mike.

Thanks a lot for the speedy responses! I'm not home right now to try it out but I'm sure that this is the issue. Whew, that's a load off my back worrying if I killed it. Hah.

If there was something about it in the manual that would probably help a lot of people out, good thinking.

Thanks again,
Tom

Yeah, there are quite a few things that have to go into the manual.

Plus, I haven't actually created a killer set of patches for the HAWK-800/AtomaHawk yet. I will have to pull in some patches from customers and try to put at least one full set of 64 patches together.

That would help alot of ppl too.

Mike.

I have fixed the sweeping issue and loaded up the patches, but I seem to have encountered yet another issue.

Only the high notes starting at the G# above middle C play notes. The rest do nothing. In addition the numbers and other buttons for programming make musical notes when pressed! I'm assuming that this is some sort of mixup in midi numbers. If there is any further information you need just ask, I'm not sure what else is of importance.

Hawk 800 Mod issues

Hi Tom,

You need to open up your synth and check that CN3 and CN5 are plugged in correctly.

I would say that either they are plugged in swapped over or one or both of the connectors are plugged in with the pins offset (difficult to do but not impossible). Check that CN3 is plugged into the CN3 row of pins (the cables are marked with "CN3" or "CN5" on the white connector plug) and that CN5 is plugged into the CN5 row of pins.

Mike.

I pulled, checked, and reset CN3, CN4, and CN5. All were in the correct places and seemed to be set completely and correctly. With CN3 pulled the programming buttons do not function and do not play notes and the said keys work. With CN5 pulled (and CN3 set) the keys do not function and the programming buttons work but also produce notes. Watching the midi signals received when the functioning keys are pressed send two different notes and once. The programming buttons send only one note. Keys below the working keys transmit no midi on/off data.

Are you able to confirm that the Poly-800 worked just fine before the HAWK-800 was installed?

Did you do the HAWK-800 install yourself?

Also, you might want to check for shorts on the CN3 and CN5 connectors/pins on the main board.

You will need to take a copy of the schematics from the files section here. And using that, work your way down the correct IC33 and IC34 data lines.

I assume you have a multimeter.

Hello,

Have an extended period of putting this off and trying not to think about it I'm back at working on my poly. I took it apart again and examined everything and nothing is visibly astray.

Unfortunately It is a bit beyond my knowledge to electronically test the paths like you mentioned. I just don't have any idea what to do really.

I have a multimeter and use it regularly to test voltages and diodes but don't know what to do in this context.

Tom,

Can you remind me as to where you got with your installation? Did you get 11 H or 11 P on start up or not?

I got it to 11 P and the patches are loaded and working. It even operates completely with an external midi controller.

It is just that the the keys below the G# don't work, the keys G# and above play dissonant notes, and the program number buttons play notes and also do their normal function.

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: Hawk 800 Mod issues

this "the program number buttons play notes and also do their normal function." tells me that you have a solder bridge somewhere on the keyboard multiplexing chip input lines on IC33 or on the keyboard itself or the display/keypad board.

My guess is that since you did the HAWK-800 install, you have ended up with a bit of solder on or around the IC33 pins. I would check there.

HAWK-800 new firmware almost ready

2009-11-06 by Michael Hawkins

Hi HAWK-800 fans,

I am just in the final stages of testing a new firmware update that provides a block "flash copy" of the patch memory. This will help those of you who have been having some trouble downloading patch banks to the HAWK-800.

There are two new diagnostic functions. One sends a copy of the patch memory to sysex and one receives. These two functions are "offline" in that you cannot play notes or do anything while executing the flash dump copy but the benefit is that the HAWK-800 can send and receive the dumps no matter how fast or slow your MIDI computer interface might be.

Will post the new code with instructions soon.

Mike.

I have scoured the main board extensively looking for a bridge and have not found one but in my testing realized the joystick is not operating either. Tomorrow I will pull the display board and examine the keyboard though it seems unlikely to have anything going on there as I have not removed them or worked on them before.

Re: Hawk 800 Mod issues

OK, as a test, disconnect CN3 from the main board and then let us know if the keyboard works all the way from the bottom key to the top. If the keyboard works, then it would seem that there is either a short on the CN3 cable itself or there is a short on the display/keypad board (that's excluding the possibility of a steering diode short but we will assume that's not the case for now). If the keyboard still doesn't work properly then let me know exactly which keys work and which ones don't. And if you are getting double notes when playing some keys then use a MIDI monitor to determine the exact MIDI notes that are being played together. This will allow us to pin down the exact data lines that are either shorted out, or the exact diodes to check.

Mike

Still only the notes above the second from top G# work. It is playing the correct note and the 8th chromatic note below 2 octaves down it.

An example is G# 4 and C 2 are playing when the G# 4 is pressed.

The buttons no longer play any notes (Or have any effect as I assume was intended by removing CN3)

OK, now plug the CN3 back in and then unplug the keyboard connector and tell me if the front panel keys still play notes or if everything works as it should.

If not, then we can move on to the next step.

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: Hawk 800 Mod issues

2009-11-09 by Michael Hawkins

OK, there are a couple of possibilities remaining.

Did your Poly-800 work just fine before you did the HAWK-800 upgrade?

With the power off and disconnected from the Poly, let's do these continuity tests.

From IC21 (the 24 pin 6116 chip) to IC34 (40H138) check the following:

Pin 8 should connect to pin 1.
Pin 7 should connect to pin 2.
Pin 6 should connect to pin 3.

If those connections are OK then I would replace IC34 first and if that doesn't fix the problem then I would replace IC33 (40H240).

I should mention that I have had to replace IC33 once before on a Poly-800.

In this case, I am more inclined to think that IC34 is fritzed.

Mike

I haven't had a chance to look at it lately, but I can say that it worked 100% prior to my install job.

Just in anticipation do you know anywhere that I can get those chips? I've looked a little online and haven't turned up any sources.

I haven't had a chance to look at it lately, but I can say that it worked 100% prior to my install job.

Just in anticipation do you know anywhere that I can get those chips? I've looked a little online and haven't turned up any sources.

Thanks,

Points 6 to 3 are not connected. The other two connections are. Can I jump the pins point-to-point or are there intervening bits?

Never mind, I wired it on a whim and the keys are now functioning 100% correctly.

I cannot thank you enough for all the support as I would have never troubleshooted this out without you.

I infinitely appreciate your contact and the fine mod kit you provide.

Best Wishes,
Tom Turner

If the keyboard still doesn't work properly then let me know exactly which keys work and which ones don't. And if you are getting double notes when playing some keys then use a MIDI monitor to determine the exact MIDI notes that are being played together. This will allow us to pin down the exact data lines that are either shorted out, or the exact diodes to check.

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: Hawk 800 Mod issues

2009-11-27 by Michael Hawkins

Tom,

Great news! And, that has got to be one of the best remote troubleshooting experiences I have ever had! Bravo to you for being patient and taking the time to slowly work through the help provided to you. You also did not run off in all different directions and start doing your own thing. Instead, you just relied on the help being given.

Bravo to you! And welcome to the succesfully HAWK-ed my Poly 800 club! Pictures please!

While on the topic, can any and all of you who have HAWK-ed your EX-800, MK2 or original Poly-800 please upload photos showing the HAWK-800 stickers (assuming that you all used them)! I would love to get a small photo album of the HAWK-800 in use around the world.

Thanks,

Mike

Never mind, I wired it on a whim and the keys are now functioning 100% correctly.

I cannot thank you enough for all the support as I would have never troubleshooted this out without you.

I infinitely appreciate your contact and the fine mod kit you provide.

Best Wishes,
Tom Turner

Finally snapped a few pictures of it. I'm not a fan of stickers really so I just set the Hawk 800 sticker where it would go for the photos. Enjoy and thanks again! The gallery of photos is linked below.
