Moog Slayer + 12/24 db Filter Mod complete!...

Moog Slayer + 12/24 db Filter Mod complete!...

2009-02-13 by serotonic_sound

I just finished the filter mod complete with 12/24 switch...NICE!...Sure feels better to have
some knobs to turn...

I removed the wrong capacitor the first time...hahaha whoops..but it wasn't hard to fix...I
need all the soldering practice I can get...

I changed the design a bit from the instructions...I actually took the capacitor right off the
board and wired it up on the switch terminal side--seems much more sturdy that way to
me...

Moog Slayer? heh nice try...not even close... The machine definitely sounds way better in
12 db/oct mode though ... I probably will never flip the switch back to 24 except to hear
how much better it sounds when I switch it back to 12 :) Seriously everyone, do the 12/24
mod if you haven't done it...the difference is not really subtle at all...The board sounds
much more "open" in 12 mode...To my ears the filter on the poly sounds quite "closed" by
nature so this really helps....maybe its just the weird envelope structure...

The resonance is totally over the top...way, way, way over the top really...I don't know
what the big deal is with self resonance personally...apparently this is desirable to some
people. Who exactly?, I donno, but I have no problem listening to some serious flying
through space acid-psi tracks and this resonance is WAAAAAY to much for me...

I definitely think we need a "tame the resonance" mod. Any ideas anyone? Can we just
throw a resistor in there somewhere?

Off to the electronics store tomorrow for the final project, for now anyway, "Missing
Joystick Board 'mod'"...I'll yet you know how that one goes...thanks for your help Mike...

Excellent! I was going to do both of these as well, but realized Wednesday that I only had one 50k pot and no decent-looking switches. Lame...

Yeah, sure, I will after I do the missing joystick board "mod" this
weekend...

Good luck. with your mods...it was fairly easy...

I just finished my filter mod. Man, it really seems to open up the tone. Couldn't be more excited.

YYYYYEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!

That switch is unbelievably sweet looking, totally inspiring...nice.

Not so sure about that tape on the capacitor, that's why I took it right off the board and
soldered it to the switch terminal...it seems safer because you can put the wire right
through the board nice and secure with no risk of bridging something unintentionally...

Ok, after a few days with this synth...I'm still really impressed...It really excels at one thing,
and sort of only one thing, but it does it sooo well...that awesome weedy wide open retro
"rave organ thing"...

Damn, but everything is still a 5th out cause of the missing joystick..Must, stop writing
tracks and fix the tuning...BUT it's toooo fun to stop...dammit... ;)

Yeah, that was a low point in the day. I was planning on moving it but then really wanted to try it out... Painter's tape isn't really a good idea, I know, though it does actually stick in comparison to crappy electrical tape.
I plan on labeling the switch with a fine paintbrush or something... maybe. I like the idea of "Make it sound good? ON/OFF", especially since I probably won't be hitting that switch that much except if I use it live and need to deepen it up or hide it in the mix temporarily.
I actually braided the three wires. Seemed clever at the time. Hah!

Hah!

Damn, but everything is still a 5th out cause of the missing joystick..Must, stop writing
tracks and fix the tuning...BUT it's toooo fun to stop...dammit... ;)

I bought a great variety pack from The Shack with teeny weensy tubing all the way up to about 1/16 inch. It's soooo much better than a piece of sticky electrical tape.

I fully intended to move and/or heatshrink that connection, but was in a hurry to leave the house and wanted to test it out.
