Jupiter vs Poly

Jupiter vs Poly

2009-02-11 by Michael Hawkins

OK, I love the Poly but you are going to have to explain to me how the Jupiter-8 is not capable of making which sounds.

What sounds can the Poly make that a Jupiter-8 cannot?

Do you have any recorded audio of these sounds that we could listen to?

Mike.

Subject: [korgpolyex] Hello poly-800 world, my story, ( and missing joystick. :( )

Hey folks, I'm really glad I found this forum! Nice work everyone.!

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: I love this synth! But, I'm missing the joystick and need some info
on rigging up some resistors to run in tune without it.

(Ok first, I'm not totally illiterate, just really excited by good/fun hardware synths)

So, I recently was given a tattered old poly-800 mk1 from a friend...Free is a really good
price!

I was really skeptical about this unit when I read about it and even more skeptical when I
got my hands on it and was loading it into my car because it felt like a total cheap piece
of sh**t. Plastic unit with crappy buttons and that stupid programming reference stencil
area that should have been filled with a million knobs and switches...anyway. ..

I got it home, hacked together a power supply to turn it on...and you know the
story...nothing, no sound....... ....oh wait if I hold the keys down I heard some kind of low
fequency something coming in on a really slow envelope...I think...So I quickly referenced
the manual, which amazingly was part of the deal, to put it into programming mode and
set up everything to make a simple square wave, unfiltered, sane adsr settings...and sure
enough...success. ..major success!!! It actually worked...nice!

Oh dear, then I read about the battery issue in the manual....WHAT? NO INTERNAL
BATTERY? You must be kidding me, seriously? come on...so I unplugged the dc power,
plugged it back in, sure enough, everything was erased...no really, come on, really?
seriously? come on korg...really? YES REALLY.

First order of business 3v lithium mod... (THANKS GUYS!)...works like a charm... Yes one
step closer to a "real synth"...

Anyway, this synth, for certain applications, absolutely kills! I love it to death...the factory
presets are ridiculously bad...seriously all of them (even patch 15 ;) This thing sounds
best when you open it right up loud and pure...I REALLY, REALLY, love the oscillators on
this thing...and the filter sounds really good, but I'm going to do the 12db mod asap, I
don't like 24db filters personally for the music I make...I prefer the more acidy sound of
12db...

I have a Jupiter-8 and a Juptiter-6, and I hate to admit it, but this thing will make killer
sounds not possible on those two machines...very complimentary. ..Retro Electro
madness!!!!! ...

Maybe you can tell...I love old keyboards... YYEEEEAAAAAAAHHH HHHH...

I'll upload some good "housey-technoy- elctroey- acidy-discoey- psy-ee" patches for
everyone soon...

Ok, long, long, story short. (Thanks for listening).. .

THE REAL MEAT OF THIS MESSAGE:

I'm missing the joystick unit completely, its not just broken, its gone, the whole unit... I
can stare down the square hole and see the connectors hanging there.

1) I think the pitch of the unit is being thrown off because there's no resistance on the
pitch mod joystick, it's sounds about 5 tones off, yeah?

2) Would somebody be kind enough to tell me what resistors I should wire up to what
leads to simulate the joystick being in the center? Please? I'll buy you a case of beer or
lunch, or write you a song, or something... I promise.

3) Does anybody want to sell me a joystick unit? or know where I can get one?

Peace everybody, happy synthing... :) :) :) :) :) :)

Actually, I don't have to do anything, but I will... :p

Have you ever played a Jupiter-8 for any length of time?

Seriously, plain and simple the Jupter-8 is pure creamy liquid awesome
drippy oooze, deep, dark and complex.

The Jupiter-6 sounds totally different, the architecture is basically
the same so it sounds similar, but the components are totally
different. It is really, totally, totally, fully, different
sounding...way way zingier and brighter--more modern, kind of
electro-psi sounding by nature and it only has a 24db filter which is
too bad...but I still love it...

The poly-800 when you open up the filter and stack all the square
waves up (and perhaps put it in chord mode if you're feeling really
sassy) is like this rad kind of cheap but still massively huge buzzy
distorted zippy sound that the Jupiter-8 can't even get close too
making...By "close", realize that I'm speaking in the company of a
bunch of old synth fanatics. :)

Though, trust me if somebody held a shotgun to my Jupiters I'd plead
with them to take me out out first, or use the poly-800 as a shield
all the while cursing its cheap plastic construction ;)

> Do you have any recorded audio of these sounds that we could listen to?

I just got my poly-800 a day ago, and I'm working on the mods (so far
so good), but like I said I'll make a bunch of patches and upload
them.... You sort of have to make patches with this thing, instead of
just flying by the seat of your faders---because of the horrible
interface....

Anyway, I don't often use very complex sounding patches for the music
I make...And I like trying to pull the distinctive pure sound of the
raw oscillators and filters from different synths...

I'll set up an A/B test of the Jupiter-8 sounding its brightest vs.
the Poly800 once I get it back in one piece and you'll be amazed trust me.

Well, then don't do anything at all but rather go hang out with friend entropy. :p

No, I have never had the pleasure of playing a Jupiter-8. I guess there's a mystique for me that the Jupiter-8 is some sort of prophetic messiah type of synthesizer. Wizard of Jupiter-8 kinda thing.

The way you're describing it sounds like the Jupiter-8 is made out of play doh!

"flying by the seat of your faders" - very, very funny!

"I'll set up an A/B test of the Jupiter-8 sounding its brightest vs.

But will I be amazed in a good way?

Re: [korgpolyex] Jupiter vs Poly

2009-02-11 by Epiik Soul

Im not sure if the Jupiters can self oscillate. Most info says yes, some users say no. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know for sure?
Even though Jupiters and Poly's both have 24db filters, I dont think they sound the same. With a Moog Slayer mod, they sound worlds apart.
As far as a comparison goes, its always apples and oranges. Every synth has something unique that makes it like no other. Theres probably some Jupiter6 sounds that the Jupiter8 cant quite get right and vice versa.
The same goes for any two synths.

I'm not so sure I agree with the "cheap plastic" construction opinion of the Poly-800.
Mine is at least 20 years old, and it's in near-perfect condition with wear only near the joystick.
I think it's very well constructed, and is at least as sturdy as my R3.

RE: [korgpolyex] Re: Jupiter vs Poly

2009-02-11 by Alex Drinkwater

I must admit to being very disappointed when I first got my 2nd-hand Poly-800 out of it's box. I initially wasn't at all impressed by the build quality, and the fact that it didn't have any knobs and sliders on it (well, apart from the Volume knob and tuning slider- but those don't really count). I've grown to love it over the years, though. My P-800 does look a bit battered now, I have to say, but that's more to do with being dropped a couple of times. My EX-800 is still going strong though, and stronger than ever, with the Hawk-800 mod, and hopefully even stronger with the AtomaHawk board (just put in my order).

Re: Jupiter vs Poly

2009-02-11 by serotonic_sound

The Jupiter-6 will self oscillate, the Jupiter-8 will not. The two
boards have TOTALLY different filter sections.

The 8 has a separate high pass and low pass section and is 12/24
switchable (and the two modes sound totally different). The 6 has one
multi mode filter (low/band/hi) and is fixed at 24db/oct, but the
resonance range is much wider.

In my opinion the filter section on the 8 is far superior.

Actually Roland seemed to have made the range of EVERYTHING on the
Jupiter-6 wider, which makes it quite twitchy to use, but you can get
it to sound more "extreme". The Jupiter-8 seems to just sound good no
matter what you do to it. Also the 6 is digitally controlled,
oscillators, lumpier sounding lfo's...you can hear the difference
instantly--The 6 lost much of that amazing organic sound the the 8 had.

Yeah, totally different beasts...

QUESTION:

Back on track: I'm gonna do the poly-800 filter mod tonight or
tomorrow, wish me luck...is it worth it to keep the factory pots in
the circuit? What functionality will I lose exactly If I don't? I'm
not too clear on how the new knobs interact with the patch settings,
and what the old trim pots did, actually...

When I do the 12/24 mod, I'll report back with how subtle the change
is compared to Jupter-8's 12/24 switch, if anybody cares. ;)

Peace,
-Tim

probably some Jupiter6 sounds that the Jupiter8 cant quite get right

Re: Jupiter vs Poly

2009-02-11 by serotonic_sound

Ok, maybe it was "expensive plastic construction", but plastic none
the less. It really feels like a cheap toy compared to other
synths...All my other synths are made of heavy gauge metal.

If you launched an old dx or roland and a poly-800 out of cannons on a
collision course...well...lets just say my money is definitely not on
the korg...

BUT, you can wear it with a strap! Yikes.

RE: [korgpolyex] Re: Jupiter vs Poly

2009-02-11 by LARRY HAWKE

I'll tell you about disappointment....when I got my brand new microKorg!!! The box seemed kind of light (and very small). Then, when I unpacked it and saw the tiny keys!.....I nearly thought about returning it for a refund!
It looked a lot bigger on musiciansfriend.com's website.
However, once I plugged that little critter in my Behringer keyboard amp...I practically forgot about it's size.
Still have a hard time with the teeny keys sometimes...
Other than that, I love it! ; Would like to have a real live MS2000 some fine day, though!

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: Jupiter vs Poly

2009-02-11 by Alec Jahn

I really wish the price difference between the MicroKORG and MS-2000 wasn't so big. I'd love to have the 2000 along side my Poly and Juno.
Plus, I love how it looks, has a somewhat Odyssey-esque shape to it, nice and thick and deep but not wide.
Anyways, I'm really interested to hear these Jupiter/Poly comparisons...!

Re: [korgpolyex] Re: Jupiter vs Poly

2009-02-11 by Epiik Soul

Thanks for the info Tim
As far as the mod goes, I went with the on/off switch and the original pots. I measured the resistance carefully before removing them from the board. Its probably easier just to use fixed resistors and theres less chance of the "factory" setting changing. Setting the cutoff and resonance to an extreme setting and then switching the filter modes back and forth can yield some great results, especially during a sequence where one hand can toggle the switch while the other sweeps the cutoff.
Good luck with the mod. Its Sooooooo worth it :)

Re: Jupiter vs Poly

2009-02-16 by synthparts

I know this isn't a Jupiter forum (for that go to
www.roland-jupiter.org) but you are obviously badly misinformed on the
JP-6. The filters do not oscillate. It uses the same IR3109 chips as
the JP-8 as a matter of fact but in a different configuration to give
you resonant low, band, and high-pass filters (a great improvement if
you ask me). Also, the JP-6 does not have DCOs as you state, it has
the same CEM3340 chip analog oscs as the Prophet-5 rev 3 and
OB-Xa/OB-8. As for "lumpier" sounding LFOs, I have no idea what that
even means. Sorry for the OT but I hate it when I see misinformation
being spread.

Re: Jupiter vs Poly

2009-02-16 by serotonic_sound

Oh SNAP!

Looks like my plan to take over the world through misinforming the public was foiled
again...dammit Doug...next time...! :)

> JP-6. The filters do not oscillate.

Yeah, I just fired up my Jupiter-6, you're right it doesn't self oscillate. Though, the range
of the resonance is seems greater...

I actually didn't fully understand what it meant to "self oscillate" until I did the "Moog
Slayer" mod...And thank god my Jupiters the don't self oscillate!...both my cat, my
girlfriend, and my speaker cones are ready to kill me...that resonance is nasty!!!...usually in
a bad way.

> Also, the JP-6 does not have DCOs as you state.
> the same CEM3340 chip analog oscs as the Prophet-5 rev 3 and
> OB-Xa/OB-8.

Yes, obviously, you would know, the curtis chips are not digital controlled...I thought they
were, sorry. Aesthetically they definitely sound much brighter and buzzier, they don't have
that same "ooommmmphhhhhh"...and they still drift out of tune...

> As for "lumpier" sounding LFOs, I have no idea what that even means.

I find the jupiter-6's lfos to sound aesthetically more robotic sounding for some reason.
They "swing" harder...Not that that is a bad thing, just different... My Jupiter-8's lfo's
sounds smoother, more organic...Maybe the Jupiter-6 has a triangle and not a true sin
wav lfo...

< It uses the same IR3109 chips as
> the JP-8 as a matter of fact but in a different configuration to give
> you resonant low, band, and high-pass filters (a great improvement if
> you ask me).
> Sorry for the OT but I hate it when I see misinformation being spread.

WHAT! NO WAY! are you kidding me, the Jupiter-8's filter section totally rules over the
Jupiter-6 any day....maybe it looks better on your oscilloscope or something, but
sonically--the Jupiter-8 takes it hands down... Maybe if it had a 12db/oct mode the
bandpass would be more useful. Seriously, every single time I play the 6, I always, every
time, wish it had the 8's filter section...

Anyway, I'm gonna shut up and write some tracks...I guess leave the technical questions to
the technical hardware gurus in the future if I'm not 100% sure...(I'm a musician and
programmer by trade)...thanks for setting me straight.

Peace...

-Tim

Off-topic, but I rarely see someone corrected about multiple claims in
a long post react in a non-defensive hostile manner. Your response to
being corrected was more impressive than getting the details about
Jupiters right in the first place would have been.

Well, I always aim to impress...Any impression is a good impression right? Oh no, wait,
that's "press" not "impression"... crap.

Anyway...I'm not exactly sure whether I just got hit with a backhanded compliment, or
more "non-defensive hostility", or a missing grammatical construct somewhere, or what...

but, whatever...no more Jupiter-speak on the korg board!...And get your facts straight
everyone...we don't wan't to piss off the synth gurus do we?

Still really digging this synth...it really likes to take over a mix though and I'm a bit
bummed that the "no-joystick-mod" only partially worked...but at least the pitch is
normal now and I don't have to transpose in my head...although I was kind of getting the
hang of it...

HI MOM!

Later y'all...
-Tim
