Joystick switching patches! WooHoo!

Joystick switching patches! WooHoo!

2009-01-09 by Michael Hawkins

OK, today I am going to toot my horn a bit because no one has bought a kit for weeks and it is bugging me a bit.

JUST NOW, I SUCCESSFULLY SWITCHED PATCHES UP AND DOWN USING THE JOYSTICK!

So over the weekend I will finish doing parameter editing, extended parameter editing and global parameter editing using the joystick.

Let me tell you all, it is VERY, VERY user friendly to switch patches using the joystick.

And, it is VERY, VERY cool to have the patch changes accelerate the more you deflect the joystick.

Just from a psychological point of view, to be free of that dang keypad is incredibly liberating. I feel like I just made an enslaved Poly-800 into a free agent!

And the best part of it was that I wrote the whole thing in one go without testing any part of it at all and it worked straight out of the box.

Man I feel good about myself right now. There must some disaster about to occur to bring me back down to size. But right now my ego is way big! LOL

will i be able to do *that* via midi, with an EX-800?

alternatively, would it be feasible to get a surplus X-Y joystick and get
it working?

are your data backups current? copies are on and off-site? are your

yes, I am going to put a special sysex command into the code to support joystick parameter editing from a Poly to an EX-800.

yes, I am fully insured. :-)

What about a special sysex command to pay your insurance?

Playstation controller analog joystick. I'll do that as soon as I finish
moving my lab to the new house. Already though how I'll interface to the EX
800 :o)

    Gold advice :oD

That's actually VERY cool.

For people that perfrom songs with a lot of parts, and need to switch patches numerous times in a song, that is a VERY useful function. Can you back up ? That is, increment and decrement ?

yes, you can change patches up or down - and at a fairly high rate - and the further you push left or right, the faster the patches changes.

Same applies to parameter editing, push up or down to increase or decrease parameter values.

And since I thought this might be something used in live situations, I am trying to work out a way to allow a quick mode change from original modulation/pitch bend mode to patch/parameter change.

Mike.

What a way to make the buttons value up/down become patch up/down? There
are config numbers avaiable, what about 77 or 78?

Re: [korgpolyex] Joystick switching patches! WooHoo!

2009-01-11 by Michael Hawkins

You will be happy to know that I have just added patch up and down selection using the parameter value up and down buttons.

And the joystick parameter editing is completed and tested.

You can download the latest beta firmware from these three links below.

http://patrioticduo.tripod.com/hawk800/EEPROM1v18.syx
http://patrioticduo.tripod.com/hawk800/EEPROM2v18.syx
http://patrioticduo.tripod.com/hawk800/EEPROM3v18.syx

To use joystick parameter editing mode set global parameter 42 to either 2 or 3.

So the joystick modes (as set by global 42) are as follows:

0 = local joystick control off (sends MIDI if joystick MIDI TX channel is set using global 41 0=no MIDI TX, 1-16=channel).
1 = local joystick control on.
2 = local joystick off and MIDI TX off. Parameter editing ON (allows editing globals, parameters and extended parameters).
3 = same as mode 2 except that in patch mode you can also use the joystick Y axis to select patches up (right) or down (left).

I'll update the user manual and documentation soon.

Enjoy!

Mike

This would be worth the hawk kit alone, for me.

Hmm...the table is different on EX from Poly? My EX has ressonance (0 to
15) in 42...

Alex,

Once you install the HAWK-800 there is a new "Global" mode that has many new parameters for setting up MIDI and various global functions including joystick controls, omni on off, patch change enable, and many, many more.

I was referring to Global parameter 42.

You have an EX-800 without that HAWK-800. There is no such thing as a global mode in the original Poly-800 or EX-800.

Mike.

    Ops :o)

Well, at least a good new: I made the new power supply for the EX-800.
Now the usual 3-pot-mods and later...and to finish it (before the hawk-800)
I'll put a joystick into the EX :oD

Hmmm...I have an old casio keyboard on the top of the shelf... :o) ;o)
