rack-mount mod

2008-12-12 by Atom Smasher

mike: if i put my ex-800 into a 1U rack, would i loose any functionality
if i didn't include the knob and two buttons for the sequencer? of course
i'd loose the use of the sequencer, but i don't care about that. i'm
concerned about the extended hawk-800 features that now, or maybe in the
future, would use those.

anyone: suggestions for buttons/keypads that would work? so far the
closest thing i've found is -

So, tell me about the Hawk-800? I'm curious to hear about it from peeps that have installed the thing.
Would love to add any functionality to my Poly-800. I'm currently planning to use the Poly-800 to control FL Studio 8 Producer on my PC (once I find a Midi-to-USB adapter).

Thanks!

Atom,

How would you remap the buttons to match the existing X,Y matrix?

If you can't remap them, which I think likely, then how would you re-purpose the code to match the new keypad?

You're not assuming that I would do this for you are you?

Nice keypad though.

Which backlit LCD were you looking at?

Mike

dremel tool... soldering iron... regardless of the matrix and cabling

i would keep the current LED display... it would take up a lot of space in
a 1U rack, but would be manageable.

so, are the sequencer controls used for anything beyond the sequencer?

The step key is used to get into extended parameter mode. That could be changed.

It's also used to get into global mode. That one is a little tricky to change but it could be done except it would have to use the Chord or Hold switches - dang, they're not on the EX800 at all.

Hmmmm, what to do?

Mike.

Neil,

just take your time putting the two kits together. Do the HAWK first.

Wait at least a day, then do the AtomaHawk.

I have a very high success rate for these kits so far with only one total failure (poor Tom, I won't forget him).

I would like to keep it that way. :-)

Mike.

Hi Gor

Have a look at Mike's page: http://patrioticduo .tripod.com/ hawk800/index. html

There are two separate kits.

Cheers
Neil

Thanks Mike

I am very experienced in electronics construction, although haven't actually done any for a few years, I used to design and build a load of stuff including my first mixer and vco synth.

I shall be careful :)

well... i'll just have to include the sequencer into the front panel,
if/when i turn my ex800 into an AtomaHawk-800r.

Indeed. From the schematics it looks like the Poly-800 is using a
(sparse) 3x8 matrix, so depending on how this 2x8 is organized you
may have to do some cutting and re-connecting. It looks like this is
a foil keypad Atom found, it can be quite difficult to get at the
connections on those and you can certainly not re-arrange any
keycaps...

Since the EX-800 is normally missing three buttons (Key Assign, Chord
Memory, Hold), are they still in the EX-800 firmware or not? The Key
Assign probably wouldn't do anything useful or rather should be
controlled via MIDI, but the Chord Memory and Hold might be useful to
bring out (to a footpedal even?) on the EX-800.

Re: [korgpolyex] rack-mount mod

Yes, those buttons are still handled in the firmware.

So it would be better to bring them all out on the front.

I am talking to an outfit that does membrane keypads as we as enclosures to see how feasible it would be to do this.

I'll let you all know it works out.

The keypad that atom is looking at is quite nice. And it we implemented an LCD instead of the LED displays then it would be possible to use that keypad to get all the buttons by developing a user interface.

Mike.

hhmmm... an AtomaHawk-800r, with custom keypad and what, a 2x16 LCD?
hehe... i'll just leave off the "r" for now... and see how this turns
out...
