AtomaHawk prototype built and working

AtomaHawk prototype built and working

2008-05-20 by patrioticduo

Yep today, I successfully built and installed the FM-800 mod with
digital potentiometer control, the Moog Slayer and the 12/24 db filter
selector.

Initially testing was ear piercing squelches from the Moog Slayer.
Wow, that self oscillation is a real speaker/ear killer.

The 12/24 db switch I was not that impressed with. Why do people like
it so much?

The Fm-800 I have yet to test fully. Hopefully, will get to that over
the next week or so.

Mike.

Spent a bit more time on the FM-800 mod today. The effect only works
when you have high sustain set on the source DCO. I have used a
digital switch to allow selection of either DCO1 or DCO2 but it
doesn't work very well in Single DCO mode because it only modulates
the filter every second note. But we can change that so that an
extended parameter would determine if the source for the modulation
was automatically changed from one to the other DCO according to each
new note playing. Also, I noticed that with the digital pot set to
zero the signal from the DCO gets loaded down by the VCF so I will
have to buffer the signals with opamps before sending into the VCF.

I am still a little bemused with the 12/24db/oct filter since it just
seems to set a lower cutoff and not much else. I would be interested
to hear from other people who have done the 12/24 filter mod to see
how they got best results.

The moog slayer mod I did just bridged out the 10K resistor with
another 10K resistor (thus halving it to 5K). I didn't set up the
digital pot yet. The results are a little scary but workable. I
definitely think a digital pot is the way to go there.

Will keep you all posted as I proceed. And do let me know how you're
all going and any suggestions are always welcome.

Mike.

HI Mike,

Lemme chime in about the 12/24. With single notes the effect is not that noticeable. Play a chord (the wider the intervals, the better) on a sawtooth analog "Van Halen" like patch. Play with filter cutoff and reso. You'll definitely hear the difference - much grittier sounding with 12 dB. Perhaps others can give more accurate descriptions. It overloads nicely and the frequency curve is definitely different than 24 dB.

cheers

Dave

how about a way to overdrive the vcf or vca?

=====================

using passive components (similar to my other mods, with ease of
implementation and a small list of easy to find parts a high priority), i
haven't been able to get anything impressive along those lines.

what might work, is to break the connection carrying the signal you'd like
to overdrive (eg; audio input to filter) and insert some jacks to make an
insert loop, then insert a distortion pedal. i haven't tried it, but i've
got enough outboard effects that it's not high on my to-do list.

so, do you think there's going to be a production run on the AtomaHawk?
when should it be available?

Hi Atom,

I think the AtomaHawk kit should be ready within three months.

Since I have the prototype working, now I have to put the PCB design
together. The digital pots worked out really well.

The Fm-800 mod works excellent. Moog Slayer works too.

Now I need to test modulation of the chorus. And decide on any other
mod's that we can think of.

3 months is probably about right.

Mike.

Hi Mike
Great job. I will order the kit some time, hope my iving in Argentina won't be much of an issue.
I'm still watering at the prospect of having a velocity-sensitive and EG/LFO controlled oscillator pitch Poly 800...
Thanks
PS: my offer to help with Spanish translations, should you ever consider non-English speaking customers, is still valid :)

Dave,

Argentina is no problem. However, don't be disappointed that I have
not put any velocity sensitivity into the software yet. That one is
almost last on my list of features. That is because it is going to be
extremely difficult to write into the software and it is one of the
least requested features.

Mike.
