Poly 800 Mk1 - new EPROM

Poly 800 Mk1 - new EPROM

2007-07-24 by b_e_r_n_a_r_d_g_u_i_l_l_a_u_m_e

hi -
I have a crashed poly 800mk1. It doesn't react, weird display, nothing but a bubbling low
sound. Seems like it lost the firmware and I need to replace the EPROM, right ?
Have the eprom bin hex data file, could get a new eprom, but don't know how to do it and do
not want to buy an eprom burner just for this one time. I am in Vienna, often in Paris too, any
suggestion where I can have this done easy, fast and at moderate costs ? Anywhere within
Europe would be cool.
thanks -- Bernard Guillaume

When you say it doesn't react, does that mean you are unable to edit
parameters? It's likely that you've simply lost all patch data.

It seems less likely that you could have damaged your OS in eprom.

What do you mean by "weird display"?

Mike.

This sounds like the power supply regulation is out of adjustment. A
really good tech who has fixed several poly's said every one of them
needed the voltage adjusted to the proper spec in the power section.
Old capacitors and components will cause this circuit to drift. Then
the CPU can't initialize the unit. The symptoms were very similar to
yours.

Have you tried doing a preset sysx dump? I find these Poly's all the
time for $20 because the owner 'thinks' the unit is bad. After doing
a sysx dump with the factory presets, voila! a fully funtional poly.
I'd start there...

Poly 800 mk1 doesnt support sysx dump ( until mk3-) ). May be would it
be similar with tape data loading ?
But I suppose it is not only sound-program lost. It looks like more
serious thing - may be mentioned power adjustment...

My three polys were all non functional when i got them, due to faulty components in the power supply circuit,

once this was rectified they all powered on with the 11 P powerup display.

if you have a battery on the motherboard, it may be low, and the memory may be corrupted,

you could try removing the backup battery and let the system totally power down for a few minutes, then re-connect the power supply

if you get 11 P then the issue is to re-load the presets

if you dont have 11 P then i am thinking there are problems in the power supply stage

as asked before, what do you mean by wierd display

Hi ! Thanks for numerous answers.

1st of all, there is no backup battery in the unit, it is one of the 1st revision models with
just the blank space on the board. I was just preparing to do the backup battery mod, but
couldn't even make it to the store to buy the battery holder... it just suddenly 'crashed'.

For what's the display, it shows a P in the PARAMETER NO. window.
In the PROGRAMM NO. window something like this ( two lines dot two lines) :

- -
      -
| .

The power supply adjustment issue that narfman96 mentioned before sounds credible. I
should probably try to find some tech. Or does any of you have a clue what elements I
could replace myself in the power supply unit ? Soldering is an easy thing... :)

Thanks !

Bernard,

If you have a voltmeter check for a good solid 5 volts in the power
section. The print is here in the file section. VR1 can be adjusted
to trim the voltage. You shouldn't need to change any components
unless you can't get the 5 volts dc. You can also check the -5 volts.
