help! poly 800 restarting and losing all stored patches

help! poly 800 restarting and losing all stored patches

2007-05-19 by Dave Bowman

Hello everyone.

It's been a while since my modded Poly 800 has been behaving
erratically. It will, all of a sudden, power off and on again and in
the process, it will lose ALL patches, leaving random-generated
patches (almost all unusable, even with "impossible" values such as 4
in the oscillator octaves). Has anybody gone thru this before?

I know the mods are not directly related to this malfunction, but as
the synth is not finally assembled (some screws yet to be tightened)
I was wondering whether a loose board could be the culprit. One more
thing: I managed to have the synth open during one of these
breakdowns and noticed that some of the diodes between DB2 to DB9
emitted a reddish light. Is this normal?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

having the synth partially assembled won't help this type of problem...
there's only one way to tell for sure if it's causing the problem.

it's probably nothing to be concerned by. an LED is just a diode that's
been optimized to produce light... IIRC a "normal" diode may produce light
when forward biased, and may react to light when reverse biased.

Dave,

The connectors used on the Poly are not the most reliable when the
whole synth isn't screwed down and together. So I wouldn't worry about
the reboot problem unless it continues to happen after you put it all
back together.

As Atom mentioned, and to expand a litte, the AD converter smoothing
diodes definitely emit a small reddish glow when the synth is in
operation.

Good luck!

Mike.

Hi Atom and Mike,

Thanks for your quick and sound advice. I did screw everything
inplace (only before thoroughly brushing the boards softly in order
to get rid of any possible debris) and hey, i had the synth turned on
for many hours now and everything is workig fine! I'd say, yay!! Keep
fingers crossed...

Mike: your work on the code looks so promising... you rock. I only
wish the MK III will be fully compatible with Atom's mods... I have
my keyboard drilled and potted already...
