Poly 800 Mod ++ NON DESTRUCTIVE++

Poly 800 Mod ++ NON DESTRUCTIVE++

2007-01-16 by belochim

Dear Poly-Freaks and Fans,

Has anyone done - and can tell me how it works - a non destructive mod
of the Poly 800? I'd like to mod my new Poly without breaking the VRs.
I've seen pictures and heard sounds of this modification before. Its
fat! There's a switch above the pots which lets you choose whether the
signal runs through the VRs or the freshly soldered pots you just
built in. Very nice idea I think since you can always go back to the
old sound and you don't limit your midi-capabilities :)

Any help will be greatly appreciated
Beloc

HI there,

Just check a post i did some 2 or 3 days ago with a link to yet
another post by Olaf... you've got the switch there.
Also check Atom Smasher's website where you'll find some photos of my
modded poly that hit the right spot you are lookgin for - i kept
original vr's and wired them to the switch.

Hey Dave,

Thanks for your Post. But in the pix you've described the VRs are
soldered away and I can't see if he just crushed them or if he used
them elsewhere.
I'm looking for a way to just leave the VRs as they are and solder a
knob to them instead which lets you choose whether you go over them
VRs or over the pots that are freshly installed.
And I can't seem to find Atom Smashers Homepage. It's not on the link
list and just googling for it brought strange results. Could you
please send me a link?

Thanks for your help :)

Cheers,
Beloc

Hi again,

I added a couple new pics to my photo album: http://
launch.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/korgpolyex/photos/browse/d961?c=

You'll see original VR's attached to cables for switching between
moogslayer and factory settings.

Also, you'll find a pic with two cables soldered to filter IC (dont
remember the name right now) for 12/24 DB fliter switching
capabilites. Definetly worth the mod! http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/
group/korgpolyex/message/551

This is Atom's site: http://synthmod.net/korg/fm800/. Be sure to
check the samples page, you'll find some stuff of my own AND a couple
additional pics of my modded Poly (and other people's).

Check the moogslayer section as well http://synthmod.net/korg/
moog_slayer/

have fun,

DaVE

Hey Dave,

Thanks again for your post. It was a great help to me. But how did you
manage to get out the VRs without breaking them?

Cheers,
Flo

Ha! We Argentineans are famous for making the most out of everything.
Seriously now, it was just a matter of patiently desoldering every
leg of the VR's with an ordinary soldering iron while using a couple
of pliers to gently pull off the VR. It can be done, I can assure you.

cheers, and keep us posted!
