Question about moog slayer mod

Question about moog slayer mod

2007-01-08 by korgpolyex800

AtomSmasher? you there?

Question for all you slayer mod people.

Is it that you are able to control the resonance from a knob on the
keyboard that makes the mod so good? Or is it that you get better
sound effects out of the keyboard?

Reason I ask is that, while I am working on adding RAM and ROM, I am
also considering putting in a bunch of digital potentiometers that
will allow the CPU to control additional parameters and I was thinking
that being able to control the moog slayer under envelope of MG
control would be great. But perhaps it turns out that the knob
control is what makes it really good. And maybe putting the control
back into the keyboard might detract from the mod. Although I could
probably make the slayer mods react to a newly defined and programmed
MIDI controller or two.

Just wondering.

Mike.

i shouldn't even answer here, because the last several years has shown me
to be a little bit of a hardware hacking geek, but not even the slightest
bit of a musician.

that said, i think EGs on the mod would certainly be nice, as long as
there's still "manual override". controlling those (and other) parameters
via MIDI would be nice (for those that have hardware to send MIDI
CCs/sysex) but i'm not sure how hard it would be to gracefully handle the
zipper effect, especially when working with 7bit control signals and
limited by RAM, ROM and CPU. the zipper effect tends to be less of an
issue with EGs than it is with CCs because the [typically] faster speed of
an EG will mask the zipper effect.

Hi Atom,

That just about made it as clear as mud. LOL

I just ordered samples of a digital potentiometer chip that has 128 tap points and comes in 10K, 50K and 100K both linear and log versions. I figure I will replace the sequencer pot with a digital version and then use the original sequencer pot as a parameter slider (instead of those dang switches) and double it up as a controller pot that can be used for mod's and other niceties.

I should be able to replace the tune pot with a digital version as well. That would then free up another pot on the front panel for use for mod's and other controllers.

On the EX800, the pots have those nice big user friendly knobs but do you think those pockey little sliders will be OK for real time use?

Hey, I'm no pro keyboardist either. I like sound synthesis engineering and pretending to be musical.

====================

my recollection of the sliders on the keyboard versions is that they're
crap. it doesn't much matter to me, though, because i've got an EX800 with
a modified "tune" knob and a PC-1600x for sending MIDI CCs.
