Re: Moog Slayer

Re: Moog Slayer

After reading the notes on the slayer, I have a query about function. If I
understand it right, the digital settings for cutoff would now only control
range of cutoff - ie., how far down or up it will tweak. So... how do you
set your default cutoff for each patch?? From what I can gather, you'd have
to tweak the knob to how you want it to sound each time you change patch?
If you don't follow: With the current mod, I set my cutoff knob to the
middle, and adjust the digital cutoff to where the sound is right for default
playing - this gives a default sound, with the ability to tweak (but only to
a set degree) above and below the cutoff frequency. But with the slayer,
from what I understand of it, the digital settings now give you control over
range - ie. how extreme your cutoff tweaks can be. So does that mean the
"middle" knob setting results in the same initial cutoff frequency for each
patch, no matter what the digital is set to??
Seems to me that it gives more freedom in the level of tweaking you can do,
but you sacrifice the ability to save what your patches will sound like by
default?

Any way of getting around this?

=======================================

the digital setting adjusts both the top and bottom of what the knob does.
you can set the knob in the middle, and still let the patch determine
about where it's set, but you will lose some of the convenience of the
presets.

if this is a concern, i'd say wire up the mod, but include a switch, so
the cutoff knob can be taken out of the picture, if desired.

(i think it can be made to work with a DPDT switch)

for the res knob, just turn the knob all the way up, and the digital
setting will work like always (only have a smaller usable range, unless
yer looking to break stuff).

instead of having a 'normal' range of 0-15, you might have 0-12.
of course, if the knob is set to (about) 3:00, you should get the full
0-15 out of it.

Hi,

you're right - the link is down. I searched my room here for some
printed sheets or schematics, but nothing found yet. Perhaps I (or
somebody else here) will find it later.

What I can say is that the Moog Slayer is a modification of
the "normal" modification already described here in this forum and in
the www. I started with the normal one. The M.S. only uses different
pots resistors and one or two wires are connected directly to ground,
but currently I don't know which ones.

So perhaps start with the normal mod, you may upgrade later...

Regards,

Olaf

Okay, I've been away for a while. My Poly 800II has the original filter/res mod. What's different with this one. Is it the pots?

I have it here! I have all the files from the page, the page converted
into a PDF-file and all the demo files in MP3 format.
As I have not enough space for all the files on my homepage I only put the
PDF file with all the information in it on my webpage. Please download it from
here
if you need it. It will not stay there forever so download it NOW if you need
it!

Moog Slayer

2005-06-20 by giannopoulosc

I recently bought a ex800 and want to add the moog slayer mod to it. I
have a soldering iron some 50k audio pots. I have never done anything
like this before and was wondering if there was an idiots guide to
doing it with diagrams etc ???? if not can any one post one up.

When I got the ex I also got the user guide and service manual, Which I
plan at some point to scan and make available for others, as there
dosent seem to be one on the web.

Cheers
