Help! My ebay-bought POLY8ii is friggin fricked!

Help! My ebay-bought POLY8ii is friggin fricked!

2005-08-12 by jonsmith6669

Hello, all,
I just unboxed my new Poly800II to find that the tuning slider, one of
the keys, and three directions of the joystick are all non-functioning
(down is the only joystick direction that seems to have any impact).
There is also a key that seems to have a problem with its contact, and
kind of scratches when i play it.

I have already contacted the guy who sold it to me and he says he'll
make it right, because it was working before he sent it. So that
part's cool.

My questions are mainly in second-guessing myself, and i wanted some
verification of the severity (or possibly even existence) of the
problems. The joystick bend (side-to-side) should be very pronounced
in ALL modes of operation, right? Moving it up should have an effect
in ALL modes, too, right? Adjustment of the tuning slider should be
very noticable, once again, in ALL modes of operation, right? And as
for the two keys with problems (one not working and one scratchy
sounding), is there a cleaning that needs to be done with these normally?

I've twiddled with a bunch of parameters to try to get the joystick up
and side directions to work to no avail, and i've played with the
tuning slider and can hear NOTHING CHANGING when i move it.

If anyone could give me some input, i'd appreciate it. My email is
jonsmith@...

let me know what you think, and thank you,
jon

the pitch bend of the joystick is only affected by the
slider that says bend next to it. The VCF and VCO
settings are program dependent. I guess I lucked out,
the one I got from EBAY is flawless. But I wish I had
a mkII!

Hi John,
The up and down on the joystick control the pitch bending, while the left and right control the intensity of the oscillator and filters. Does sound like it got damaged during shipping.
I think I've got a pdf of the manual around, if I find it I'll upload it... Jobiwan

actually that is incorrect, up is LFO to VCF and down
is LFO to VCO, right and left are pitch bend.

"actually that is incorrect, up is LFO to VCF and down

actually, you're wrong too. up is lfo to DCO, not VCO. the oscillators are analog but digitally controlled, which gives them their great stability. down is lfo to VCF, and left is pitch down and obviously right is pitch up.

just make sure the "Bend" slider is all the way up, or for a perfect 5th, i found that mine has to be set just above "9" or else it goes a little flat when down and a little sharp when up.

6 of one half a dozen of the other,
I still call it a VCO even when it is on a DX7, which is all digital!

I'm sorry, but you got it all wrong. The "oscillators" are simply a
single chip digital 8-channel tone generator (MSM5232RS in the service
manual). It was used in a lot of arcade games, too.

Since everything in the Poly-800 is digitally controlled, why do you
think they didn't call the VCF "DCF" while they were at it?

Best regards,
Philip Linde
