I’ve been able to get it to work using my iPhone headphone output.
Remember that the Poly has a switch on the back for low or high volume input to the data jack. You may want to try that in different settings as you’re raising your volume.
Also, if you can use a stereo-to-mono, 1/8 inch cable, you’ll have more luck. The Poly’s data input jack is a mono jack.

I'll try again once more to use my laptop. I'll try Jan's method of starting with no volume and slowly raising it until the Poly800 starts flashing a bit. Then restart using that volume setting.I'll let you all know how I make out.ThanksBob
