Hi everyone,
I am new to this group and to the Poly800 world.
I
just got my first Poly800 a couple of days ago, and I've been able to have so
much fun with it already that I am already under its charm.
I was able to
gather a lot of precious information in this group, and I am really thankfull
for that!
However, after scrolling down many group conversations, some
questions still remain...
My first concern is that after opening the beast I
saw that the inside was (unsurprisingly) super dusty, which I believe (I am
almost certain) would explain the noisey/cracking noise I get out of it
(especially when I turn the volume knob) which brings me to the first question:
Is there a good, unanimous way to do a deep cleaning of a poly 800 ? I saw,
here and there, a couple of advices, ones mentioning Servisol Super 10 as the
best way to clean electronic contacts, others preventing against its effects on
plastic. The reason I ask is that I have little knowledge about electronics
(almost inexistent to be honest) and thus how to clean electronics, and I do not
want to make any mistake that could ruin the synth because of my lack of
attention. I contacted the closest synth repair place around me (who appears to
be located more that an hour drive away from where I live) and asked how
much he would charge me for a cleaning and he told me as low as $90, which is
way too much for me (especially if I have to drive 2 hours in total for it), as
I am sure there are other ways to do a pretty good job by myself on that
matter.
My second question concerns the batteries. I have the battery mod
installed in it, but I was wondering if it was necessary to insert the 6 C
batteries along with the CR battery (it was a CR2025 that was in it so I guess
I'll use those ones). Reason I ask is that the CR battery in it appears to be
dead as it wasn't saving the patches and I'm already tired of having to deal
with that "load"/"err" combo, so I want to minimize thi! s
confrontation.

Welcome Alexis,
For rotary knobs, you need a good zero-residue cleaner. Rotary pots don’t
need a lubricant. Use it sparingly and don’t get it on the paint on the outside
of the Poly800. That gray finish is applied over black plastic and comes off
quite easily. I’m sure you will see areas on the outside where it has worn off
already. Servisol and De-Oxit are good, but don’t get hung up on brand names.
Just make sure you find one with no lubricant. No, you do not need the “C” cells
installed if you have a CR2025 installed to save patches, assuming that the
lithum cell is installed correctly. For a “deep” cleaning, key contacts are most
important but that means removing 49 springs, 49 keys and all the carbon contact
strips. Use alcohol on the carbon contacts and the gold contacts on circuit
board. Hopefully all of the little tact switches under the buttons on the panel
will work okay since they are a pain to clean.
