Are you sure about that? From what I have been told, the unit
will draw as many milliamps as it needs, it's the voltage that
matters... Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but refs would
be appreciated! =)

You can use any universal power supply that comes with different voltages and connector adaptors.
But it should have 300-500mA max., because it delivers higher voltages if the power consumption is too low.
(I use "7.5V" switch position with 500mA power supply and measure about 9V while working with my Poly800)
And be sure to use the right polarity.
