Mine is a Poly 800 II so I don't know exactly how the MkI works,
but it seams like a strange behavior, have you tried to change
the chorus settings? Usualy chorus effects works well with a
50% dry / 50% wet ratio.

I couldn't hear the chorus effect through the headphone jack at all. Is that normal?
If I use the separate audio outs, the chorus effect can be heard although it's not very pronounced.
Is this normal or do I have a malfunctioning Chorus board?
