keep getting a 'disk unavailable error' when i try to load or save on the q80.

I'm also having the same message. I can't format or save anything. I also tried to use a disk cleaning kit, but to no avail. Note: Using the original power supply. --- In kawaisynths@yahoogroups.com, "picctecc" <picctecc@...> wrote:

Hiya, If you have had this posted to you the disk drive cable may have worked itself free,so have to take the lid off and have a look, the other reason might be that the original floppy has been replaced with the wrong version or the wrong jumper setting? I can't say I know much about the Q80,what is the size of the floppy. 720kb or 1.44mb,I'd guess 720K? Obvious question but if you are using 1.44mb disks have you covered the hole to make the DD think they are 720K?

This Q-80 I got was actually a barely used/near mint unit with the original box, manual and power supply. I opened it up and everything was nice and clean. There was no signs of any loose wires or replacement drive from the previous owner. It all appears to be original parts. My next course of action is to either buy a brand of floppies through trial/error, patience and hope one of the brand of floppies I buy works or invest an emulator drive. I'm leaning more towards replacing it with an emulator drive. Thanks for the help! --- In kawaisynths@yahoogroups.com, Jason Adkins <jason_ralf808@...> wrote:

HD disks most likely won't even format. -- Gordonjcp MM0YEQ

Hi, there exists some trick . I used HD floppies , with filled small window . There are two small windows - one for write-preventing, one fpr format recognition. So , if I can remember, there`s necessary to fill both small windows. http://www.floppydisk.com/ at the end of page. I formatted modified floppy in Q80, and no problem with using. But I have to say, I haven`t used it a lot nor frequetnly. Somewhere I wrote, using of different format floppy can hurt to drive. And it would be critical for Q80. --- In kawaisynths@yahoogroups.com, Gordon JC Pearce <gordon@...> wrote:

DD drives don't produce a strong enough magnetic field to write on HD media, and don't have sensitive enough amplifiers to recover the signal. -- Gordonjcp MM0YEQ

Hi you are probably right technically but have used taped up HD disks on Roland MC50,S330,EPS16+ and Atari ST's with no problems but yeah wouldn't want to archive anything important using HD in DD drive but ok to get old machines working.
