the 6th note...

the 6th note...

2008-08-26 by somethingkillingyou

Hi

I'm very unlucky with the K3 I bought last year...
got another problem...
this time it is worst than ever...

well, here it is:
I switched my K3 on, I played some notes... but some were missing...

so I started trying out all the keys and I noticed that the sixth note
of any pattern was not playing (riff, chords... whatever way you
arrange 6 notes played...)

I tried even via MIDI: no way, K3 won't play the sixth note, it will
start playing again the seventh... and so on...

so my original thought ("could be dust among the keys...") was wrong,
cause it does not mind which notes you play: the sixth note will
simply NOT play...

I think I could live with a 5 note synth, but the problem is that it
does NOT retrigger the notes after five notes are playing, it simply
does not play the 6th... or, to say better (maybe), the note command
is sent and received, but for some reason it won't be played out...

I seriously think there's a broken voice card I need to replace/pull
out (and live with a 5 notes K3)

I hope it's just some cable (or stuff like that) not properly
connected and it is not some more serious problem...

any advice?

what should I check?

please help...

Sounds like you have a bad voice. Could be one of the filter chips, or
it could be something else.

Some of the chips are replaceable, and using an IC extractor/insertion
tool, you can pull out each one and reinsert it to make sure the
connections are good. Finding the schematic online shouldn't be too
difficult so you will know which chips are relevant, but in general if
you look inside you will find that there are six groups of chips that
represent each voice. Look for other kinds of damage to the resistors,
capacitors, and circuit board itself. Sometimes corrosion, or a dead
battery, can destroy nearby components.

As cheap as a K3 is, you might find it more convenient to find another
one. I used to have a K3m with the same problem and I eventually just
sold it on eBay because I already had another one as well as the
regular K3. -pc

Free K3 in Urbana, IL

2008-08-27 by Andrew Wagner

If anyone is within driving distance of Urbana, IL and wants a free
K3 with at least one bad voice, send me an e-mail. MIDI works, and I
was even able to download new voices to the keyboard. In monophonic
mode every key works (i.e. at least the first voice circuit works).
Shipping is not likely to be a worthwhile option; you could use a K3
as a fallout shelter they are so heavy.

Cheers,
