I just went through this on my K3. The battery looks like a thin quarter and is not real costly. If you don't replace it, then everytime you power on you will have to restore factory internal patches and you will only be able to save patches to the cartridge. It was a real pain, but it was pretty easy getting to the battery, which was sitting on the circuit board near the power cord.
