Intermittent backlight

Intermittent backlight

2004-07-29 by Antoine Deschênes

Someone told he got an intermittent backlight. I thought my inverter was
dead but Iin fact I go tthe same problem and guess what? I found the
cause! It's the connection from inverter to LCD backlight/backlights in
my case(including male and female socket connections). All you have to
do is to get some 22AWG 103\ufffdC wire(3' to be sure), a 3-pin male socket
like the one in there, a 3-pin female socket and 4pins to go in it(It's
not hard to miss you shot with these pins)

Oops, I found that moving the wires while the K5 is on makes the
inverter moving. Guess what : Dry joints INSIDE the inverter is the problem.
Now I just need to find a way to remove the casing . . .

That's a nasty one! I looked at mine when I was doing my PS board -
the inverter is potted in black epoxy resin underneath :-(((

look at the UK backlights site they have inverters which will work.
The PDF is available for download, they are about oh 20-25 euros each?

They say better and with less noise too..... sounds good.

cheers, Antoine

Adam

p.s I'm thinking, some HH Amps used to use these things - ouch.

I can get some inverters for 5CDN$ about 2,5 euros with backlight but
the problem is that they are some 2x40 char. backlight and it's a 12v
inverter.(And they make no noise too). Heating the joints(but first
removing it from the board not to detach cooper from PCB) seem to have
fixed the problem, but I don't think it will last much time. I think
that the trick that tells to add solder maybe just heats the inverter
joints finally.

I removed it, heated the joints about 5 seconds each and resoldered it.
