Better fix for backlight on K5m

Better fix for backlight on K5m

2004-05-19 by exdc

Purchased backlights from telesis for several pieces of gear a year
ago, finally got around to putting them in. For the TG77 Telesis had
no direct instructions, and the instructions offered from the UK-group
selling backlights was not geared for amateurs. The instructions found
at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/backlights-uk/page5.htm would yield
easier results with a couple additions, since many changing these
backlights will not be using a service manual, will not have done a
take apart on a TG77 etc. Here are some additions that would have made
my going easier if I'd had them, hand-holding for amateurs like me:
1. Remove the outer case (9 screws).
2. Remove the front panel (3 small screws on top, 3 screws - magnetic
screwdriver! - inside the TG77 at the bottom near the front); panel
slides out forward.
3. Remove 4 screws to pull the LCD assembly forward. Undo its only
flat cable at the contact on the board inside the TG77, to ease moving
the LCD assembly around; it will still be attached to the insides of
the TG77 with 2 wires.
4. Remove solder from the old backlight's 2 foil strip contacts. Lift
the foil strips with a miniature screwdriver and complete the solder
removal. Cut the foil strips off at the edge of the old backlight,
which is going to stay right where it is, since it is apparently often
glued to the assembly and impossible to remove without many dreadful
further steps.
5. Lay the new backlight on its front, so you're looking at its back.
Cut off 0.5 cm of the foil strips, leaving plenty but not too much.
Re-tin the solder points on the assembly. Slide the new backlight in,
in front of the old one (easy fit, not snug at all).
6. Solder the new foil strips onto the contact points; make sure
they're not touching (he-he).
7. Re-assemble; remember the magnetic screwdriver for those pesky 3
screws from inside the TG77. Remember to re-insert and reconnect the
flat cable.
8. Take a break: you've been working 20 minutes!

So make it the late hour, make it postsoldering stress syndrome,
whatever you like - this is about a TG77 and ended up put in here by
me by accident. Mea culpa mea culpa mea maxima culpa! Anyhow, the K5m
backlight I put in today was not as much a cinch as the TG77, but got
done. The instructions at
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/backlights-uk/page5.htm claim to describe
the method for a K5m, but that's wrong, though some of the pix are
useful. Better pix at http://www.kfuenf.org/en/techhelp.html. Getting
at the LCD assembly is the trick, but once you get inside, you will
discover a number of flat cables that need removing - mark them for
re-assembly! A couple more caveats: in those instructions they write
"(11) When the wires are loose, use a long nosed pliers to slide the
old backlight out. You will need to bend GENTLY upwards to clear the
two solder connections." On the kfuenf site he adds a piece of tape to
protect the backlight from those solder points. I say mark where those
two solder connections go, then just unsolder them, put them back
afterwards, makes the whole thing much easier. Once you get to the
kfuenf site's re-wiring pix, look out for breaking off the newly
tinned copper strips before installing your wires, and particularly
after getting the wires attached, since curving them back onto their
rightful places is a bit fiddly. Anyhow, sorry about the wrong post.
This backlight replacement (for the K5m; elso for the TG77 in case
anyone's interested) costed about $40, and it took under an hour. Much
faster for the TG.
