Emax, Mirage, Akai S612 Sample Dump / Editor looking for Digisesign Soft Synth

Emax, Mirage, Akai S612 Sample Dump / Editor looking for Digisesign Soft Synth

2013-01-12 by macdougall.jason

Hello,
new to the group. I own an Akai s612 sampler early 12bit lo-fi that sounds sweet to my ears. After reading an early Ensoniq Transoniq zine from 1986, I discovered some software that will communicate with the Akai S612, Mirage, Emax and Emulator II. I'm trying to find Softsynth by Digidesign for Atari/Mac. If anybody knows where i can find/purchase/trade this I would be very grateful.
I would love to transfer the 64k memory back and fourth and manipulate wave forms, for single cycle work this program looks like the bomb.

I do have Digidesign softsynth SA for mac.
Think i uploaded this to the emax list some years ago, but could upload it here too.

But..
This is software from 1989 and at least the SA version is tied to the Digidesign sound accelerator hardware, which is also from around 1988.

Since computers were not very powerfull at that time i doubt that there is a version of softsynth which does not need a digidesign soundcard.

So, for the software to be usefull you would need:
a mac with nubus slots and mac os before version 7.5.
That leaves a mac IIcx, IIci, IIFX, quadra and perhaps a SE or LC.

You need to set the mac to 16 bits mode, this rules out any power mac if i remember correctly. it will crash consistently in 32 bit mode.

Then you need a digidesign sound accelerator I.
Perhaps it supports other dsp cards from that era, but i'm not sure.
If you really are interested i can put some effort in getting it working here and see if it there are options for other soundcards.

That said, is it worth it if you can run turbosynth on much more macs without a dsp card? Turbosynth can do much more than softsynth.
For exchanging to the E2 you could use alchemy.

If none of this seems familiar to you, then you need to be really dedicated and search for the hardware and put a lot of energy in getting that old mac and digi stuff to work.
If you are, reply and I will sort stuff out.

a G4 mac will run OS9 and that includes alchemy, a great substitute for sound designer and turbosynth. ( talks to samplers via SMIDI and SCSI )

without a ST/AMIII or DIGI card i believe.

i've done it!

PS: there may be a beta of SDII when i died that doesn't need hardware

been too long, i forget.

Yes that would be awesome if you could upload it.
I actually have a IIsi running 7.1 with a sound accelerator card and a 442 interface. I also have a IIci and another IIsi both with audio media II cards. While my EII was in the shop i spent time researching and building old macs so it would be ready when the eii was fixed. Now its working. It would be cool to try out the Soft Synth software.

BTW i have alchemy installed but havent figured out how to transfer banks or voices to the EII. Any tips would be helpful.

Thanks.

i thought that Emulator II was right in the sampler drop down menu.

you often have to facilitate a handshake with the sampler so they can trade info.

Never heard of that, but there is sounddesigner universal in the files section. SDII grew to a hard disk recording tool and sampling stuff was removed, so it would probably not usefull from a sampler point of view.

That's becoming a rare collection!
Strange that you can connect the 442 to the soundaccelerator because they have very different connectors.
SA uses the soundtools interfaces. Perhaps it's a SAII?
I will upload it, might take a few days.
I think i have the alchemy manual in pdf, if so i'll upload it too.
Cant help with the E2, I only got emax, e3 and e4.
