EMXP runs on vintage Macintosh?

EMXP runs on vintage Macintosh?

2012-10-08 by James Ulibarri

Runs like a champ off a 2012 Mac Mini Server.
16gb of Crucial memory.   2 Crucial SSD hard drives.
2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 running Boot Camp with OSX Server and Windows 7.
This thing flies.  Not a cheap or easy project.  But it's done.

Thanks.  I actually swapped cases from a Macintosh Classic II to a Mac Plus since I shot that image. It looks even more nostalgic.  Those cases are tough to find without cracks and yellowing.  I got super lucky finding 3 unused units recently. First I felt bad to cannibalize a perfectly good vintage Mac, but I got over it very quickly.  I still run Sound Designer on a Mac SE/30 but it's more of a hassle than it's worth for me.

With EMXP, Awave, and the new Prophet 2002 editor, and a terabyte of storage, and other audio programs, than everything is cool.   The screen can be wearing on your eyes after a while since it's so small but I have the Thunderbolt connection connected to an LCD projector which renders an 8" screen on my wall.  Totally tits.

Hi,

That is beautiful. Did Apple start making these old units again? Or is this some kind of custom thing? That unit wouldn't happen to be for sale would it? :) You said you have two units right? Would you be willing to sell one to me? I am in Montreal. Would it work with an EIII rack?

Cheers,
Gary

Gary,

Sorry, non for sale.  You can build one yourself.  Find a clean vintage Macintosh case, source a new 8" Century monitor from Japan.  Buy the fastest Mac Mini you can afford and hot rod it out with max ram and faster hard drive(s).  The old ones or the cheap $599 ones won9;t do.  They have 5200 rpm hard drives and they choke.  Also, you'll need a copy of Windows for EMXP.  (that's the whole point of this thread).  If you get that far email for DIY install instructions for the LCD and Mac Mini unit.  There is some dremeling and drilling holes on the bottom of the case, and custom brackets are needed that can be made. And a clear plexiglass shelf needs to be custom cut so the Mac Mini doesn't move around in the inside.  My install is very clean.  I have seen some real Frankenstien hack jobs over the years that look like ass.  But this one is trick.

Good luck and email me if you need help.

James
